Wow! How time flies! I'm trying to get used to the idea that we are starting our final week of school for this academic year!
This coming week in Literacy, students will conclude their novel studies and watch movies based on their novels.
In Science, students will complete their experiments, lab reports, and project boards. They will present everything in class by the end of Thursday. On Friday, the 4th grade students will visit our "Third Grade Science Fair" and give feedback to our students.

This coming week is EOG Testing. Ms. Gutt already sent out information about test preparation. Please do not be late for school on Wednesday, May 31, or Thursday, June 1!
This coming week, in addition to testing, in Literacy students will continue Novel Studies, and will continue studying grammar, using Grammar Island and Practice Island.
In Science, students will prepare for the "Third Grade Science Fair". Please make sure your student has all supplies necessary to conduct their experiments, as well as a poster board or project board. All experiments should be completed by this Friday, June 2. Presentations begin Thursday, June 8, and the fourth grade students will visit our Fair on Friday, June 9.

This coming week in Literacy students will continue to develop skills in fiction reading comprehension and writing, using Novel Studies. Students will continue to develop grammar skills, using Grammar Island and Practice Island.
In Science, Ms. Moschel's class will work on the Third Grade Science Fair. PLEASE make sure you have signed the Assignment Sheet. Students need to supply ALL their own materials for the experiments, as well as their own poster board or project board. Note the experiments need to be concluded by Friday, June 2. Students may start running trials of their experiments as soon as you sign the Assignment Sheet, I OK the experiment, and they bring their materials to class. ALL experiments MUST be done in class. Please read the Assignment Package for additional information.
Ms. Gutt's class will complete a Science Test covering all of the "Forces & Motion" Unit, on Monday, May 22. There are five sets of Guided Notes, (on my Teacher Page under "Documents"), and three graded worksheets, (not on the Teacher page). We spent several days reviewing for this test in class. After the Science Test Ms. Gutt's students will also be preparing for the Third grade Science Fair.

Weekly Update, May 15 - May 26
Good Morning Parents!
I hope you are having a lovely weekend.
Last week was packed with special events - and they were all terrific! The Book Fair was excellent. Thank you to everyone who gave a book to our class - we received everything on my wish list! Grandparents' Day was wonderful and it was a pleasure to spend some time with the grandparents who were able to attend. Night of the Arts was truly a night to remember. I absolutely LOVED our students in their sunglasses rocking out to Santana!
This coming week, Ms. Gutt's students will complete their studies on Forces & Motion and will review for the Unit Test. That test will be MONDAY, MAY 22, instead of Friday, May 19.
On Friday I sent home your child's Third Quarter Progress Report, and the results from their recent i-Ready Test. Please look for those documents.
This coming week we are celebrating "Kindness" with a different dress-up theme each day. (The schedule was send home with your child last week, and is listed below.) We have school auditions for the Talent Show on Tuesday, May 16. Please make sure your child has everything he/she needs to audition. A keyboard is provided.

Weekly Update: May 8 - May 19

This coming week is our School Book-fair.
On Monday, May 8, teachers will be completing class wishlists.
On Tuesday, May 9, students may complete wishlists or purchase books.
On Wednesday, May 10, and Thursday, May 11, students and parents may purchase books.
Thursday, May 11, is Grandparents' Day! I look forward to spending time with all our students' grandparents.
Thursday, May 11, is also Night of the Arts. The following is a note from Dr. Morris:
3rd Grade Music Classes--Night of the Arts Performance
THURSDAY, MAY 11, 2017
at Christ Lutheran Church
4519 Providence Road (just south of Fairview/Sardis Road)
Art Show and Sale: 5:15-5:45 pm / Music Performances: 6:00-7:30 pm
Parents: Our annual Night of the Arts performance will again be held in the beautiful Worship Center of Christ Lutheran Church. The 3rd grade classes are singing a beautiful lullaby from the Isle of Man
(between the English and Irish coasts) and, on recorders, performing a Latin jazz tune in the style
of Carlos Santana. There are recordings of both on my Teacher Page (that I hope your child has
been listening to).
Dress for the 3rd Graders should be something “dressy” – a dress shirt or polo shirt with
dressy pants (or dress jeans) and girls may wear a dress/skirt if they want. For the recorder piece, I
want students wearing pants with pockets to pull out a pair of sunglasses to put on.
STUDENTS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR BRINGING THEIR OWN RECORDERS!
The Performances will take place beginning at 6:00 pm and should finish around 7:30 pm with the
Art Department presenting its Art Show and Sale from 5:15-5:45 pm in the lobby. Children will sit
together by grade level at the front of the sanctuary and be monitored by classroom teachers and parent volunteers. Children should be in their seats no later than 5:50. Children will not be allowed to join their performance if it is already in progress on stage.
Parents can enjoy the show from the back of the main floor or from the balcony
(where the view is better).
This year’s program will again include a Grand Finale with the 7th & 8th Grade Band
accompanying all the classes and the Scholars Academy Chorus in a medley of songs from “The Sound of Music.” The audience will join the students on the finale, (lyrics provided in the program).
Every grade level K-4 and the middle school chorus and band will be presenting performances
that they have worked on especially for this evening, along with wonderful works of art, to present
a school-wide showcase of the artistic talents that we are so privileged to have here at the
Scholars Academy. Every child deserves to have his/her talents seen and appreciated. Please
make every effort to be present for the Art Preview and the musical program. Ms. Holland, Ms.
Tans, Ms. Atkins and I have been working to present an entertaining evening that will flow
seamlessly from beginning to end.
I’m looking forward to this special occasion for you to see and hear the work your children have
been doing in the music and art classes at Scholars Academy.

PARKING: Christ Lutheran Church has a huge parking area that can be accessed from Providence Road or from Sardis Road (check Google Maps). The entrance to the Worship Center is easily seen from the main parking lot. An overflow lot is close by on the north side of the church.
PERFORMANCE DVD: The church’s professional videographer will be taping the performance and a copy of the DVD may be purchased for $10. Order forms will be available at the entrance to the sanctuary and at the Main Desk at school after the performance.
On Wednesday, May 10, students in Ms. Moschel's class will hold Class Talent Show Auditions. Students should have everything they need to perform their act. (We will provide an electronic keyboard.) We have 8 acts in our classroom, and we can only send 4 acts to the School Auditions on Tuesday, April 16. From those 4, only 1 act per classroom will be chosen for the School Talent Show, on Friday, May 26. Students will vote for the best acts in our classroom. A panel of 8th grade students will decide which one of those acts will be in the Talent Show. Please email me if you have any questions.

Weekly Update: May 1 - May 12
Good Morning Parents,
I hope you are enjoying our lovely, but hot,weekend!
This coming week in Literacy students will take a Practice EOG Test in Literacy. This will help students feel more at ease when they take the real EOG Test, in that they will be more familiar with bubbling in answers and with the kinds of questions that will be asked. This will also inform me if a student has a particular area of concern.
Students will also continue to develop skills in fiction reading comprehension, vocabulary, and writing, using Novel Studies. They will develop skills in grammar using Grammar Island and Practice Island, and will continue to develop skills in nonfiction reading comprehension, using Time for Kids magazines.
In Science, Ms. Moschel's students will study motion and will review for the Unit Test on Forces & Motion, which will be on Tuesday, May 9. The test will cover: The Nature of Force, Balanced & Unbalanced Forces, Friction, Gravity, and Motion. Student worksheets will also be covered. Guided Notes can be found on my Teacher Page, under "Documents".
Ms. Gutt's students will study gravity and friction.

Please remember to send your child's earphones to school Monday and Tuesday, April 24 and 25, for the i-Ready Tests. Monday's Test covers Literacy and Tuesday's Test covers Math.
Next week in Literacy students will complete fiction reading assignments using Jr. Great Books, and will finish writing assignments, using Daily 6-Trait Writing. Both skills will be incorporated into Novel Studies. Work on Grammar skills, using Grammar Island and Practice Island, and work on Nonfiction Reading Skills, using "Time for Kids" magazines, will continue.

Weekly Update: April 17 - April 28
Hello Parents,
I hope you have been having a WONDERFUL Spring Break!
If you read this in time, PLEASE send magazine to school on Monday, April 17. The students will be cutting them up, so don't expect them to be returned!
Next week in Literacy students will begin phasing out Jr. Great Books, and Daily 6-Trait Writing. Instead, they will begin working on Novel Studies. The Novel Studies will incorporate fiction reading comprehension, vocabulary, and writing. Students will be divided into two groups. One group will read Maniac McGee and the other group will read As the Red Fern Grows. Students will be further divided into discussion groups of four.
We will continue to work on skills in the following areas:
Nonfiction Reading Comprehension, using Time for Kids magazines,
Grammar, using Grammar Island and Practice Island.
In Science, Ms. Moschel's homeroom students will study balanced forces and gravity.
Ms. Gutt's homeroom students will study nuclear energy and review for their Science Test covering, electrical, chemical, and nuclear energy, on Monday, April 24.

I can't believe its April already! I hope you are enjoying this lovely weekend. :-)
We are now starting the 4th quarter of the school year. In Literacy we will be concluding our fiction reading comprehension program using Jr. Great Books, and beginning novel studies. In Science we will be concluding our Energy Unit and beginning a unit on States of Matter. Ms. Moschel's class will have their final Energy Test on Monday, April 3. and Ms. Gutt's class will have their final Energy Test on Monday, April 24. Both tests will cover electrical, chemical, and nuclear energy, and one lab report. All guided notes and the lab report are on my webpage under "Documents".

Last week, (as you all know), was the school musical, The Sound of Music". I think it was the best production yet! I know I was incredibly impressed by the talent of our students, and with the ability of Ms. Hinkelman to put this show together. I was wiping tears from my eyes during the show. Congratulations to each participant!!
Grandparents' Day is Thursday, May 11. If you know that your child's grandparents cannot attend, you may ask them to write a note or card to your child. We will deliver the notes and cards during the grandparents' visit.

What an exciting evening Night of the Notables was! Thank you to everyone who came and spent time asking students questions. They loved having an opportunity to dress up and show off their knowledge as their Notable Characters!

Ms. Moschel's class will complete a Science Test on Friday, March 31, covering Chemical and Nuclear Energy.

Weekly Update, March 13- March 24
Good Morning,
I hope you are enjoying this very chilly weekend!
As you know, Night of the Notables is this coming week. Students have completed the outlines and rough drafts of their speeches. Peer Reviews and Final Copies are due this coming Tuesday, March 14. Final copies may be, but do not have to be, typed. Students will begin presentations on March 14. The Outline, Rough Draft and Peer Review should be turned in right after the student's presentation. Final copies may also be turned in at that time, or right after the Night of the Notables, which is Thursday, March 16, at 6:00 pm.
This coming week in Literacy students will prepare for Night of the Notables and will give presentations of their speeches and tri-fold boards. Grading Rubrics for the speech and for the presentation have been handed out to the students. Students will also continue to develop skills in the following areas:
Fiction Reading Comprehension, using Jr. Great Books.
Writing, using Daily 6-Trait Writing.
Grammar, using Grammar Island and Practice island.
In Science, Ms. Moschel's class will study chemical and perhaps nuclear energy.
Ms. Gutt's class will review radiant, thermal and mechanical energy. They may study electrical energy.

Weekly Update: March 6 - March 17
Good Morning Parents,
I hope you are enjoying this chilly, but sunny, weekend!
Night of the Notables is coming up fast! This is an annual Scholars Academy event, and all children are expected to participate. It is Thursday, March 16, in our school, beginning at 6:00 pm. Here is note from Ms. Gutt:
Metrolina Regional Scholars Academy is holding its annual Night of the Notables on Thursday, March 16, from 6 -7 pm. On that night the third grade classrooms become a North Carolina Museum. Students are expected to come that night dressed as their notable persons. They will stand at a given location in front of their tri-fold board in their assigned classroom, (either Mrs. Moschel's or Mrs. Gutt's classroom, depending on the category that their notable person falls under). Students will know which classrooms that they have been assigned to. Students will stay at that location the duration of the evening, (NO running from class to class.) Parents will work their way through both classrooms seeing all of the Notable North Carolinians. At the end of the evening, students will let their homeroom teacher know that they are leaving and will take their tri-fold boards home. Please contact Mrs. Moschel or Mrs. Gutt with any questions or concerns.
The Literacy assignment for Night of the Notables is a speech. The outline was due 3/2. The rough draft is due 3/9. Presentations will begin 3/14. The outline, rough draft, and final copy must be turned in after the student's presentation.

Please remember that we have a few more days to supply the School Snack Cart. Send store-bought, individually wrapped food items. They will be sold for 25 cents/piece and the proceeds will go toward the 8th grade trip. We are a nut-free school. Thank you!

I enjoyed meeting with many of you over the past two days, and I hope everyone is enjoying the lovely weekend!
Reminder: February is when third grade is bringing items for the school snack cart. Please donate individually wrapped, store-bought items. They will be sold for 25 cents/piece to raise money for the 8th grade class trip. Thank you to those who have already contributed!
Next week in Literacy students will continue to develop skills in the following areas:
Fiction Reading using Jr. Great Books.
Writing, using Daily 6-Trait Writing.
Grammar, using Grammar Island & Practice Island.
On Monday, February 20, I will hand out and explain the Literacy assignment for Night of the Notables. Students will write a 4-paragraph speech. The outline and research is due by Thursday, March 2. The peer review and rough draft is due by Thursday, March 9, and the final copy is due Tuesday, March 14. Class presentations will begin Tuesday, March 14. Night of the Notables is Thursday, March 16. It is at school, in the classrooms, and begins at 6:00 pm. Students will have class time in my Literacy class and in Ms. Gutt's Social Studies class to work on the Night of the Notables assignments. During this time I will not be assigning any Language (Spelling) Tests or "Time for Kids" magazines.

Thank you to everyone who went out of their way to make last week special for me, and the other teachers. I truly appreciate every letter, card, flower, bit of chocolate, gift card, and gift. A special thank you to the parents who watched my students, allowing me to go out to lunch with the staff on Friday. That was a real treat!

Hello from the Art Department! I've been enjoying teaching your students in art this year. I have an idea for a project, but am hoping for assistance. I would love to do a project using henna design as the subject. This would be done on paper, rather than on hands, but I would like to use this theme for design. Here's where I'm hoping for help... I'm fairly unfamiliar with the traditions and cultural ideas surrounding this beautiful work. I am hoping to have a parent who is familiar with this art form and who would be willing to volunteer their time to come talk to the students about the traditions and process of doing henna. If anyone is interested in volunteering this time, please email me (Curt Atkins) at catkins@scholarsacademy.org and we can coordinate this time. I am hoping to do this project during the 2nd half of 3rd quarter, and would love to have this parent come in on a Friday afternoon and speak to both groups - hopefully at the same time. Thanks!

Yesterday I placed your child's Second Quarter Report Card in his/her orange "Take-Home" folder. Please look for it. Sign and return the envelope, and keep the Report Card. For the Third Quarter Progress Report you may choose to schedule a Parent-Teacher Conference OR receive a written Progress Report. Yesterday I placed your child's Second Quarter Report Card in his/her orange "Take-Home" folder. Please look for it. Sign and return the envelope, and keep the Report Card. For the Third Quarter Progress Report you may choose to schedule a Parent-Teacher Conference OR receive a written Progress Report. Weekly Update: January 30 - February 10
Hello Parents,
I hope you have all been enjoying a healthy, happy weekend!
THANK YOU to those parents who sent in paper towels! We should be all set for a while.
I have been reviewing our schedule and I have re-done all the due dates. I did this to allow enough time for me to meet with each reading group two days in a row, and each writing group, whenever an assignment is due. I also want to allow more time for spelling, grammar, and handwriting. I apologize for the inconvenience. Please note the revised due dates. I will go over them with students Monday.

Weekly Update: January 23 - February 3, 2017
Hello Parents,
I hope you are enjoying a lovely weekend, even though it is wet!
We have been having an issue with water bottles. Every day, one or more of them spills, disrupting class, soaking papers, and requiring many paper towels to clean up. Therefore, Ms. Gutt and I have decided that students must keep their water bottles above the cubbies. They may get drinks any time except during direct instruction. So, we have now run out of paper towels. Please send in a roll or package of paper towels, if possible. We really appreciate it!
Valentine's Day is February 14. This year, students will decorate paper lunch bags. Beginning February 1, students may bring valentines and put them in the bags. On the 14th, we will eat lunch in the classrooms. Students can get their valentines and have a treat. (The treat is being organized by our room parent.) Following is a list of students in both third grade classrooms.
We have also been having a continuing issue with gaming cards, (Pokemon, etc). Therefore, Ms. Gutt and I have decided that if a student is caught in the act of playing with gaming cards instead of working or packing up, or whatever they are supposed to be doing, we will confiscate the cards. We will not return the cards to the student. Instead, YOU will have to come to school to pick up the cards. It is your decision as to whether or not you wish to allow your child to bring gaming cards to school, but please be advised that we intend to enforce this rule. Thank you for your understanding.
Next month, you may choose to either receive a Third Quarter Progress Report, OR you may sign up for a Parent-Teacher Conference. Conferences will be held on February 16th in the afternoon, and all day February 17th.
