Dear 2nd Grade parents:
On Grandparents Day (Friday, April 13), the 2nd Graders will be presenting a performance of Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious (try typing that fast) from Mary Poppins for our visitors at 9:30. It's a short performance, but we have worked up a little movement to go along with it and there will be "solos" by pairs of students (I had lots of volunteers for this). You may have heard your child singing this or your child may have asked you to go to my school web page to find the recording for them to sing along to. The children have learned this very quickly and are excited about presenting it. It won't be a perfectly polished performance, but it will be entertaining, and shows how quickly they can learn a song and movement, which is really quite a complex undertaking considering everything involved.

Weekly update: March 26 - April 13
Good Morning Parents,
Once again, I wish you a fine weekend with your families. Enjoy each other while you are together. :-)
This coming week in Literacy we will be working on "The Mouse's Bride". I assigned the work yesterday, all students highlighted the assignment sheet, we went over all pages together, students wrote the due date in their Planners, and I insisted that all students take the assignment package home. Please review the package with your student. Because of days off, Spring Break, and field trips, the assignments are not due until Tuesday, April 17.
We will NOT have spelling words or a Language Test this coming week.
In Math, students are taking the Chapter 2 Test, and we are beginning Chapter three, which is measurement.
In Social Studies we will continue designing our ancient Chinese cities, and will continue reading "Time for Kids" magazines.
In Science we will be presenting our Building Projects. All projects are due Tuesday, March 27. Unless you have requested a specific time for your child's presentation, I will call the students randomly. All presentations will be complete by the end of school on Thursday, March 29.
Here are some reminders for the coming weeks:
Reading Records are due each Monday.
Building Project Presentations begin Tuesday, March 27.
We will NOT visit the Morrison Library this Wednesday, March 28.
If we complete the Project presentations in time, we will meet with our Buddy Class Thursday, March 29.

Monday, April 2, through Friday, April 6, is Spring Break. There is no school.
Tuesday, April 10, we will visit the Mint Museum. We will leave school at 11:30, travel by bus, and return around 2:30. Please pack a lunch for your student to eat at the museum. If you have not returned the Permission Slip, please do so as soon as possible.
Friday, April 13, I will place your student's Third Quarter Report Card in his/her oragnge "Take-Home" folder.

Weekly Update: March 19 - March 30
Good Afternoon Parents,
Once again let me wish you a happy weekend! It sure is beautiful weather!
Last week our class enjoyed a visit to the Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte. It is a beautiful facility, and was designed by the Little architectural firm, which also designed our school, and which we visited Friday.
Many thanks to Mr. Thomas Jimenes-Elaison, who treated our students to a wonderful presentation and tour of the facility. We were lucky enough to then visit the construction site on the UNCC Campus where they are building a new statium. It was great for our students to be able to see the different stages in the design and construction of a real structure.
This coming week in Literacy we will conclude our study of "Three Boys with Jugs of Molasses and Secret Ambitions". All assignments are due Thursday, March 22.
We will begin our study of "The Mouse's Bride". We will have our weekly Language Test on Friday, March 23.
In Math we are completing Chapter 1 Tests, and continuing review in Chapter 2.
In Social Studies we will design an ancient Chinese city, and will begin study of the ancient Chinese system of education. We will continue to read "Time for Kids" magazines. Pictures about "Responsibility" were due last Thursday. Four students STILL have not turned them in. Please check with your child to make sure he/she has turned in their picture.
In Science we are still studying load. In addition we will study properties of different materials, and determine how properties are related to use.

Weekly Update: March 12 - March 23
Good Morning Parents,
I hope all is well with you and your families. :-)
This week in Literacy we are working on the assignments for "Three Boys...". Since we will be gone on a field trip all day Friday, Spelling Word definitions will be due Wednesday, and the Language Test will be Thursday. We will have a Class Meeting and meet with our Buddies this week.
In Math, all students have now completed the End-of Year Assessment for the "normal" second grade curriculum. If you have not signed your child's test, please do so and return it for the students' cumulative files. Here is the grade distribution:

We have completed Chapter 1 in the "normal" third grade curriculum and started Chapter 2. Both Chapters are largely review.
We had a Math Meeting with grades 2, 3, and 4 teachers. The 3 and 4 grade teachers reported that is it VERY IMPORTANT that your child know addition, subtraction, and multiplication facts when they enter third grade. Counting on fingers is not acceptable any more in second grade, and will certainly be an even bigger problem in third grade.
In Science the Building Project, Part II, B, is due Tuesday, March 13. We will examine how engineers determine the amount of load a structure can hold, identify the steps in the Engineering Design process, and discuss properties of materials. On Friday, we will visit an architect's office and a construction site.
This weekend I received notice that you must sign a "Release of Liability" form in order for your child to visit the construction site. I will send the forms home Monday. Please look for them, sign them, and return them right away. Thank you! I am sending home an assignment for you to sign and return. Ms. Cuneo observed this class and liked the lesson so much that we are going to put the students' papers in their cumulative folders. It is a "RAFT" assignment, which I will send home Monday. (I will label it.)

We will begin study of daily life in ancient China, and will continue working with the "Time for Kids" magazines. We are studying "Responsibility" this month. Please have your child send in a picture showing an example of responsibility.

weekly Update: March 5 - March 16
Hello Parents,
I hope the weekend is pleasant for you and your families!
Congratulations to our class! (And to you.) We came in second place in the school drive to bring items for the Ronald McDonald House where families stay when they have children with congenital heart defects or other serious illnesses. Ms. Weeks' class came in first place. BOTH classes will be going to visit the Ronald McDonald House! I will send home a permission slip when we get this field trip scheduled.
Last week we had our big ice cream party! Thank you to everyone who sent things in! The kids had a great time, and no-one got sick (that I know of). We had so much ice cream left over that we will have another party this week! You don't need to send a thing. Again, thank you.
This week we start in the third grade Math books. We are still reviewing, but we will skip many lessons in these first two chapters. I will send home the End-Of-Year Test for the second grade curriculum. Please look it over carefully with your child, sign it, and return it for my files.

On Friday, March 9, I will assign the work for the next story, "Three Boys with Molasses and Secret Ambitions". Those assignments are due Tuesday, March 20. We will continue our weekly Friday Language Tests.
In Social Studies we will be writing using authentic Chinese brushes, ink, and rice paper. We will also be making block prints, which the Chinese invented. We will have a lesson on our new character trait, "Responsibility". Congratulations to Anushka Kulkarni for winning the character award for "Friendship"! We will continue practising to read for facts, and interpreting graphs, charts, and maps, using the "Time for Kids" magazines.
In Science we will build and test bridges, and start a mini-unit where students will mix mortar, design, and building a stone wall.
