I hope you are having a WONDERFUL Holiday and a safe and happy Winter Break!! :-)
Here are some reminders for the coming weeks:
School begins on January 2. Please turn in completed Reading Records.
On Wednesday, January 4, we will visit the Morrison Library. It would be a great help if your child could bring a sturdy bag for his/her books. We will leave school around 1:15, travel by bus, and return around 2:30.
Clubs begin Friday, January 6. They are from 2:30-3:00. Please make sure your child is dress appropriately for his/her club.
On Tuesday, January 10, we will visit Discovery Place. We will tour the museum, watch a movie about mummies, and those students who parents have signed the permission slip will view the special exhibits of mummies. We will eat lunch at the museum, so please remember to send a lunch and a drink. There is a gift shop, so send a few dollars with your child if you wish. We will leave school at 8:30 and return around 2:30. Thank you to all those who have agreed to be chaperones!

Weekly Update: December 12 - January 2
Good Morning Parents,
I hope you are having a wonderful weekend!
Last week our students presented their ancient Egypt projects. I have to say that they were VERY well done, and reflected a lot of time and effort. The students presented their material with almost no reading, and the masks are outstanding. Thank you for supporting your child as he/she completed this project.
Also last week a representative from the National Kidney Foundation came to our school. Our class presented her with the money they raised, $533.00, and a pile of Furbles. I know we are all proud of our students for taking steps to make a difference in our world.
Here are some reminders for the following weeks:
On Tuesday, December 13, all school library books are due.
Tuesday night, December 13, is Night of the Notables, from 6:00 - 7:00pm. I will send home all masks and costumes that day, and students should come dressed to our classroom. Please take the projects home that evening. It will be an exciting night!
On Thursday, December 15, I will place the second quarter Progress Reports in your child's "Take-Home" folder.
On Friday, December 16, classes will have their Winter Parties. Ours will start at 1:30.

I hope you had a WONDERFUL Thanksgiving Holiday! Our 2nd grade Fall Feast was a big success, thanks to the participation of all of you. The food and company were both fabulous, and I know the kids had a great time.

Weekly Update: November 21 - December 2
Good Morning Parents,
We had another busy week, culminating in a whole-school assembly where Dr. Peine unveiled a banner about our school being a nationally recognized Blue Ribbon School. I am very proud of our students, staff, administration, and parents! It takes teamwork to achieve such an honor.
Here are some reminders for the coming weeks:
November is our month to send in items for the Snack Cart.
Tuesday, November 22, is a big day! The first draft of the Egypt project research papers are due. We wrote an example research paper as a class, so students have a model to use regarding format.
Also on Tuesday, I will be out of the classroom in the morning. I will be with our 8th grade buddy class and Mr. Yodice at the courthouse, where we will be practicing for the Mock Trial Competition on December 9. (I will be out of the school, at the competition, on December 9.)
Also on Tuesday, our class will visit the school library. Please send any books you wish returned.
Also on Tuesday, November 22, we will have our FALL FEAST!! Students will eat a snack lunch and our feast will begin at 1:30, in the cafeteria area. The students and I are looking forward to sharing a delicious and varied meal with you and your families!!
From Wednesday, November 23, through Friday, November 25, we have our Thanksgiving Holiday. There will be no school on these days.

We must turn in all money to Ms. Hargrove, get a check from her, and get the check to Discovery Place three weeks prior to our trip. Parents, you will decide whether or not you wish your child to view the exhibit about mummies. Because of that choice, we will not know the number of students attending the exhibit or the amount of money needed until we receive all permission slips. So, please return the permission slip with your payment as soon as possible. Chaperones are welcome, but must pay all fees, just as the students do. Thank you for your cooperation!

Weekly Update: November 14 - 25
Good Morning Parents,
Last week our students enjoyed a trip to the school library. Many of them checked out the maximum number of books (5). Books are due two weeks from checkout, and may be returned at any time.
We also enjoyed a trip to Lindy's Homemade. At no cost to us, the personnel explained and demonstrated how Italian Ice was mixed, and took us on a tour of the factory. We were given free Italian Ice, a coupon, and tee-shirts! Thank you to the people at Lindy's, and to all our wonderful chaperones!
Here are some reminders for the coming weeks:
On Tuesday, November 15, students must select their God/Goddess for the Egypt Project, and write its name in hieroglyphics and English.
Tuesday, November 15, is also picture re-take day for anyone who missed the original picture day, or for anyone who is not happy with their original photo.
On Tuesday, November 22, The written research paper for the Egypt Project is due.
Also on Tuesday, November 22, the second grade classes will hold a FALL FEAST. Please sign up on the following webpage and indicate what you will bring to the feast and how many people from your family will attend. Weekly Update: November 7 - November 18
Hello Parents,
November is our month to bring items for the Snack Cart. Please send pre-packaged, store-bought items for the students to eat. Items are sold during lunch periods, and the proceeds are used to help finance the 8th grade class trip.
One of the things I love about teaching is that every day is exciting, and last week was no exception. Last Monday was our Fall Party. A BIG thank you to all parents who helped with this event! The kids had a wonderful time doing the crafts, eating the treats, and visiting with their Buddy class.
On Tuesday, the second grade classes had their Egyptian Bartering Market. Many exotic items were traded, and I think everyone felt like they made some great trades. Again, thank you for supporting the children and sending in items to trade.
On Wednesday we visited the Morrison Library. If possible, please send a study bag with your student to help him/her transport library books. Thank you!
On Thursday the second grade hosted the BugFest. Just about every family attended, the "buggy" treats were delicious and imaginative, and the slide shows were entertaining! Students really enjoyed showing off their projects to the parents, and to other students and siblings. Thank you (yet again) for attending this festival and making it a smashing success!
On Friday, I placed your student's Report Card and completed math work in his/her "Take-Home" folder.

Also on Tuesday, November 8, I will hand out our next project, the Ancient Egypt Project. Students will assume the role of an ancient Egyptian God or Goddess, research the God/ess, write a short story about it, and make a mask. On "Night of the Notables" our students will dress as their chosen God/ess. If you have a religious objection to your child assuming the role of a God/ess, let me know, and your student may be a Pharaoh instead.
On Thursday, November 10, the second grade classes will visit Lindy's Italian Ice to see how a system operates. We will tour the facility, see how the Italian Ice is made, and then enjoy some free Italian ice. We plan to eat lunch in the park, weather permitting. Please send a lunch and drink with your student. Also, each child must bring a jacket, (it's cold in the building), and shoes which cover their entire feet. We will leave school at 9:30, travel by bus, and return around 12:30. Chaperones are welcome.
Tuesday, October 15, is Picture Retake Day, if you were not satisfied with your original pictures.

Weekly Update: October 17 - October 28 and beyond...
Good Morning Parents,
I am writing you early this weekend because I will soon be heading to Blowing Rock with my sister.
Our students (except one absent student) have all presented their Insect Projects. Let me say that the presentations were informative, entertaining, and VERY well done. I am impressed that the students knew their information so well, and with the quality of the drawings and models. WELL DONE!!
The second grade visited the Carolina Raptor Center this past Monday. The weather was beautiful, and the program was full of interesting information. I believe eveyone enjoyed the trip. Thank you to all chaperones for helping to keep our students safe.
We visited the Morrison Library this past Tuesday. We returned MANY library books, and no-one owed fines! Students were also issued Scholars' Academy Library Cards, and we visited our own school library. (Please be careful not to return our school library books to the public library!)
Here are some reminders for the coming weeks:
On Monday, October 17, I will be out of the classroom. I am spending the morning with my sister, and the afternoon at a meeting regarding the new National Social Studies Standards, effective next academic year.
Thursday, October 20, and Friday, October 21, are half-days for students. Dismissal is at 11:25. I will be meeting with you for Parent-Teacher Conferences. I will also give you the graded Insect Project sheets.
On Saturday, October 22, I am leaving on a cruise to the Caribbean. My husband's family is taking their mother on this cruise for her 80th birthday. My husband surprised me with the cruise as a birthday present! He cleared it with Dr. Peine, and then told me! I will be gone from the classroom from October 24 through October 27. Friday, October 28, is a teacher work day and there is no school. Ms. Jones already has the lesson plans and she will be our substitute.
On Monday, October 31, (I will be back by then), classes will have a Fall Party. Our room parents will coordinate this event. Students may bring treats and costumes. No toy weapons or extremely scary masks are allowed.
On Tuesday, November 1, the second grade classes will have a Bartering Market to simulate a market in ancient Egypt. Please have your student bring a blanket and some small item to trade. In the past, student shave brought food, pencils, trading cards, hair clips, stickers, etc. Since there were no electronics in ancient Egypt, we will not allow them at our Market.
On Wednesday, November 2, we will visit the Morrison Library.
On Thursday, November 3, the second grade classes will hold a Bug Fest!! Families are invited to attend. The Bug Fest will be at school, from 6:00-7:30pm. Insect Projects will be on display, and photos of our students will be shown on the white board. Please bring a treat to share (a bug theme would be great). Our room parents will coordinate the treats, so let them know whether or not you will be attending, and what you can bring. Thank you! This will be an exciting event.

On Saturday, October 22, I am leaving on a cruise to the Caribbean. My husband's family is taking their mother on this cruise for her 80th birthday. My husband surprised me with the cruise as a birthday present! He cleared it with Dr. Peine, and then told me! I will be gone from the classroom from October 24 through October 27. Friday, October 28, is a teacher work day and there is no school. Ms. Jones already has the lesson plans and she will be our substitute.
On Monday, October 31, (I will be back by then), classes will have a Fall Party. Our room parents will coordinate this event. Students may bring treats and costumes. No toy weapons or extremely scary masks are allowed.
On Tuesday, November 1, the second grade classes will have a Bartering Market to simulate a market in ancient Egypt. Please have your student bring a blanket and some small item to trade. In the past, student shave brought food, pencils, trading cards, hair clips, stickers, etc. Since there were no electronics in ancient Egypt, we will not allow them at our Market.
On Wednesday, November 2, we will visit the Morrison Library.
On Thursday, November 3, the second grade classes will hold a Bug Fest!! Families are invited to attend. The Bug Fest will be at school, from 6:00-7:30pm. Insect Projects will be on display, and photos of our students will be shown on the white board. Please bring a treat to share (a bug theme would be great). Our room parents will coordinate the treats, so let them know whether or not you will be attending, and what you can bring. Thank you! This will be an exciting event.
On Friday, November 4, I will place your student's Report Card in his/her orange Take-Home folder.
On Thursday, November 10, the second grade classes will visit Lindy's Italian Ice to observe how a system works. Permission Slips will be coming soon. Chaperones are always welcome!
Tuesday, November 15 is picture-retake day.
On Tuesday, November 22, the second grade classes will host a Fall Feast. This is a Thanksgiving-style event, and families are invited. Please bring a food dish to share. Ethnic food is encouraged. Let me know what you intend to bring and I will fill in any missing items.
Wednesday, November 23, Thursday, November 24, and Friday, November 25, are holidays to celebrate Thanksgiving. There is no school.

Weekly Update: October 10 - October 21
Good Morning Parents,
WOW! I am amazed at how successful we have been making and selling "Furbles" and raising money for the National Kidney Foundation!! Our students and parents have been fabulous. We sold 480 Furbles in 3 days! Plus, we earned another $20.00 from people guessing the correct number of pieces of candy in containers. That brings our total to $500.00!!!! I am so proud of everyone. THANK YOU!
Here are some reminders for the coming weeks:
On Monday, October 10, the second grade classes will visit the Carolina Raptor Center. We will participate in a program, tour the grounds, and eat lunch. There is a gift shop. We previously asked you for donations to adopt a raptor. The response (again) was overwhelming and we have enough donations to adopt TWO raptors. Our class is adopting an owl. Certificates of adoption will be coming. Again, THANK YOU for your generosity!
On Tuesday, October 11, the presentations for our Insect Projects will begin! Students will be called in random order to present. ALL students must turn in ALL parts of their project on Tuesday, whether or not they present that day. I am looking forward to these presentations!
Wednesday, October 12, is individual Picture Day. Students must turn in an order form on Wednesday to receive any pictures. Our picture time is 12:15. AT 1:30 we will visit the library. Please send in any library books you would like to return, and pay any fines.

Weekly Update: October 3 - October 14
Good Morning Parents,
I am loving this nice, cool weather! It really feels like Fall!
Last week the students brought in their insect facts for me to check. It looks like they did an excellent job! I am looking forward to the presentations, which begin on Tuesday, October 11. If you want to watch your student present, let me know and we'll schedule a specific time.
Here are some reminders for the coming weeks:
Reading Records are due each Monday. Everyone brought them in (again) last Monday!! Spelling words are handed out each Monday. The stem is given on each Tuesday. Definitions are due by each Thursday. The Language Test is each Friday.
This Tuesday, October 4, is Pajama Day. It is entirely voluntary. Students may bring pajamas to school, along with a sleeping bag or blanket, a pillow, and ONE stuffed animal.
This Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, Oct. 5, 6, & 7, is the school Book Fair. Students may purchase books, or write a wish list for their parents.
Friday, Oct. 7, is the Fall Social, from 3:30 - 6:30. I just received permission (Friday) to sell our Furbles to raise money for the National Kidney Foundation at the social. I will bring a shelter and table. I need a few parents to also bring tables and help collect the money from the sales. Please let me know if you can help with this!! Also, please encourage your child to make a poster about our benefit. We will put them up in the school this week and place them by our Furble sales area at the social. Thank you for your help!!

Parent-Teacher Conferences
Hello Parents,
Parent-Teacher Conferences will be Thursday, October 20, and Friday, October 21. Both days will be half-days for students, with dismissal at 11:25.
Conferences will be held in 30 minute time slots, with the first time slot beginning at 12:15 and the last time slot beginning at 3:45. Therefore time slots are as follows:
12:15 - 12:45
12:45 - 1:15
1:15 - 1:45
1:45 - 2:15
2:15 - 2:45
2:45 - 3:15

3:45 - 4:15
Please indicate three preferences for your conference. Include your name, your student's name, the day and the time. Conferences will be scheduled in the order I receive your responses.

Weekly Update: September 26 - October 7
Good Morning Parents!
Once again, our class had a very busy week! Aside from all our regular studies, we visited the Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens. Thank you to all parents who gave their time to be chaperones and help keep out students safe!! The facilities, grounds, and program were exemplary. Our students were enthusiastic and well-behaved. I am very proud of the way they drew pictures of various things they saw at the Gardens.
We also had our first trip to the Morrison Library. It is a very nice library with a good selection of children's books. Sadly, several students were unable to check out books because their fines exceed $5.00. Please check with the library system and make sure all fines are paid.
We also met with Ms. Lannon's 8th grade class, which is our Buddy Class this year. As you probably already know, we have a student who suggested at our Class Meeting that we raise money to benefit the National Kidney Foundation. Our students voted to do that, and we recruited our Buddy Class to help us. We are making yarn creatures called "Furbles", puff-ball creatures, and greeting cards. We plan to sell these items at school for $1.00. We may not make a LOT of money, but everything will be done by the students (as opposed to a fund-raising company). I am working with our Community Service Coordinator to see if we can get any local "celebrities" involved with this, but that may not work out. I bought supplies for our project, but I would really appreciate it if every family could send in one skein of yarn. Any color or weight will work fine. Also, please don't let your children keep the Furbles they make at home. Then they won't buy any! Thank you for you help.

I've done this before and the students have been VERY well-behaved and productive.
Please remember that I do not have any information about Spanish or Chinese classes. Please contact those teachers directly if you have any questions or concerns.

Weekly Update: September 19 - September 30
Good Morning Parents,
What a busy week we had! We had a very good turnout for Teacher Talk Monday night. Thank you to everyone who attended.
We had class elections on Tuesday. I don't know how your children reacted at home to the elections, but they were very good sports in class. Everyone was respectful and kind, and there were no tears. Congratulations to our new officers! Elections will be held again after Winter Break. Existing officers will not run for office again.
Also on Tuesday, students brought in their Insect Project drawings for me to check. I am very impressed with the quality of the drawings, AND that the students seem to have drawn them by themselves. Students need to bring the drawings back to class for the presentations on October 11. At that time I will grade all parts of the project.
Here are some reminders for the coming weeks:
On Monday, September 19, Reading Records are due , as they are every Monday. I have asked the students to read Chapters 1-4 of "The Green Book".
On Monday, September 19, students will receive their Spelling Words for the week, (as they do every Monday). Definitions are due Thursday, September 22, (as they are every Thursday). I usually give the students their stem of the week on Tuesday. Because we will on a field trip all that day, I will assign the stem on Monday. Stem word definitions are due Thursday, September 22, (as they are every Thursday). The Language Test is Friday, September 23, (as it is every Friday). Keeping this schedule gives students consistency from week to week, and helps them learn to plan ahead.

Last Friday JD Dolinger spoke to our class about Monarch Butterflies. She also gave our class two Monarch caterpillars and milkweed. With any luck we should have two chrysalises soon!

Tomorrow, Monday, September 12, is Teacher Talk from 6:00-7:00pm. We will meet in my classroom and discuss everything we can think of (as time permits). I look forward to seeing each of you there!

Friday, September 23, is a half day of school. Teachers will remain after dismissal to prepare our First Quarter Progress Reports.
Our class will be buddies with Ms. Lannon's class. We will meet every other week and do building and science activities.

Teacher Talk Date
Hello Parents!
The Festival of India was great. The dancing & music, food, sales, and displays were all superb! It was also fun to see some of you there.
I gave you the wrong date for the second grade Teacher Talk. It is Monday, September 12, NOT Thursday, September 8. I'm sorry about that and hope it does not cause you any inconvenience. See you then!

Weekly Update: September 6 - September 16
Good Morning Parents,
I hope you are enjoying the holiday weekend! I am looking forward to attending The Festival of India later today, and I'll probably see some of you there.
As you know, last week I assigned our Insect Project. Copies are on the "Documents Management" page of this website.
We also had our first fire drill. The students did a great job! We reviewed and practiced all the safety procedures.
Here is some information about the coming weeks:
We have our library time scheduled. Because books are due every three weeks, we will go to the Morrison Library every three weeks. We will travel by bus, leave school at 1:30, and return around 2:30. Chaperones are always welcome! Here is the schedule:

Our first field trip is scheduled for Tuesday, September 20. We will visit the Daniel-Stowe Botanical Gardens where we will view insects, the Butterfly Pavilion, and the gardens. Be sure to send a lunch and drink, as we will eat at the gardens. There is a gift shop. If you wish, you may send a few dollars with your child on the day of the trip. The cost is $7.00, exact cash, or checks payable to MRSA. Chaperones are needed. The first two chaperones from each class to return their Permission Slips will be admitted at no cost. Additional chaperones will need to buy a ticket at the door. Permission Slips were send home with your child on Friday.
If your child does not complete an assignment with the rest of the class, I will send it home to be finished as homework. If I send home Math homework, please only do the number of pages I designate on the note to you. Do NOT make your child do all the pages listed on the yellow sticky note, since he/she is expected to work on them in class.
We will be having bi-weekly class meetings, led by class officers. At the meetings students will discuss issues or ideas they have and propose solutions or plans for events. Everything will be submitted to me for approval. To this end, we will be having elections for class officers. The Officers are: President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Parliamentarian. Here is the election schedule: Nominations will be Tuesday, September 6. Students have one week to campaign. They may make posters, have slogans, and bring small items for the entire class. Items must be given to each child, and not be contingent upon receiving a vote. (That would be a bribe, which is not allowed.) On Tuesday, September 13, each candidate will read their election speech. They MUST prepare a speech to run for office. We will vote, swear in the officers, and have our first class meeting the following week.
We had our first Language Test on Friday. I have not graded them yet, but I will let you know if I have any concerns. Please make sure your child prepares his/her spelling words and definitions for these weekly tests!
There is no school on Labor Day, Monday, September 5.
On Tuesday, September 6, students must choose their insect for the project. If no insect is chosen, I will assign one. Also on Tuesday, Spanish homework is due. Remember to return your child's Reading Record the first day of every week.
On Thursday, September 8, "Teacher Talk" will be held from 6:00-7:00 pm in the second grade classrooms. This program is for adults. I will explain our curriculum, policies, and try to answer any questions you might have. I am looking forward to seeing you there!
On Tuesday, September 13, the drawings for the Insect Project are due. I will examine them, make suggestions if necessary, and return them to your child for use in their presentations.

Weekly Update: August 29 - September 9
Good Morning Parents,

The first few days of school were fun and exciting for me, and I hope your child feels the same way. It looks like we have a class of truly kind children. :-)
Thank you for returning the Student Information Sheets and Movie Permission Slips. Several parents have indicated that their students have severe allergies. If your child needs an epi-pen or other emergency medication, PLEASE make sure that I have it in my classroom!! I will be taking these medications out to recess and to all field trips.
Questions have arise regarding Spanish homework. Since I do not teach Spanish, I don't know the answers. Please contact Ms. Martinez directly with your concerns. You may email her at: iboltz@scholarsacademy.org
I did find out that students should write their Spanish homework answers in their Spanish spiral notebooks.
Your child should read every day, and fill out their Reading Record. Please sign this Record and return it to me on Mondays. It is part of their Literacy Grade.
Students have worked on a Math Assessment. Some completed the assessment, some didn't. I am working on placing students in appropriate math groups, based on this assessment. Students may be moved to a different group at any time, based upon their daily performance. This week, all students will work together to complete the last few lessons of their First Grade Math Book.
Here are some updates for the coming weeks:
Your child has completed the Spelling Assessment. Students were asked to spell 25 words, ranging in difficulty from "bed" to "opposition". Scores ranged from -1 to -19. I placed the students in three performance-based spelling groups. Students may be moved to a different group at any time, based upon their daily spelling and their weekly Language Tests. Language Tests will be given on Fridays, beginning this Friday, September 2. Students will learn a spelling rule, will work with words following that rule, and then will have to apply the rule to words on the Language Test. They will have to define the words, using their own words, in a complete sentence, with proper punctuation. They will also learn a word stem each week. On the Language Test, students will have to tell me what the stem means, use it in a word, and then define the word in a complete sentence, with proper punctuation.
On Tuesday, August 30, I will assign the Science Insect Project. Your child will be given a copy of the project and the grading rubric. I will also post these on the "Documents" page of this website. Please pay attention to the Due Dates. Also, PLEASE let your child do the project. You may assist him/her, but don't do the work for them.
Friday, September 2, is half day. Students will be dismissed at 11:25.
Monday, September 5, is the Labor Day Holiday. There is no school.
On Tuesday, September 6, your child's choice of insect is due for the Insect Project. If you child has not chosen an insect by this time, I will assign one.
Thursday, September 8, is "Teacher Talk", in my classroom, from 6:00pm to 7:00pm. At that time, I will try to explain our curriculum and various policies. I will also try to answer any questions you might have. I look forward to seeing you there!
