Good Morning Parents,
Fall has arrived! I really enjoy the cooler weather and the colored leaves, so I am happy that the season is finally changing. I hope you are able to spend some time outdoors with your families.
Last week our students visited our Scholars Library and the Morrison Library.
I assigned the Egypt project, and sent it home in your child's orange "Take-Home" folder. Please take a look at it, if you haven't already. We discussed the project at length in class, but if you have any questions, do not hesitate to email me.
THANK YOU to every student and parent who made my Birthday such a special day!! The students were very excited about my surprise gift, and I am grateful to each of you for your generosity.
This coming week in Math students will practice the skills of decimals, place value using very large numbers, determining area, and determining perimeter. Students are also taking Chapter Post-tests. We now have 4 performance-based Math groups.
In Science we will be studying insect habits and habitats. Students will review, and then take a Unit Post-Test about insects. They will take a Unit Pre-Test about outer space. We will begin our study of outer space by examining the effects of gravity.
In Literacy, students will take a Language Test on THURSDAY. Spelling words will be assigned Monday and the stem will be assigned Tuesday. Definitions will be do on or before WEDNESDAY, and the Test will be Thursday. Students will practice the skill of writing events in proper order, and will practice the convention of using commas in lists.
In Social Studies students will compare hieroglyphics to our system of writing. They will continue to complete "Time for Kids" magazines. The Egypt Project name, written in English and in hieroglyphics, is due Thursday, October 31.

On Tuesday, October 29, I will out of the classroom in the afternoon, for a doctor appointment. Ms. Usha will be our substitute.
On Wednesday, October 30, spelling definitions are due.

Students will take a Language Test.
We will have a Fall Festival Party from 1:30-3:00 pm! Students may bring costumes to change into, but please do not send any toy weapons or especially gruesome or scary masks. Ms. DiBella is in charge of the party, so please direct any questions to her.
On Friday, November 1, there is no school. Teachers will be at school preparing the First Quarter Report Cards.
On Monday, October 4, Reading Records are due.
On Tuesday, October 5, individual student pictures will be taken.
Tuesday evening, from 6:00-7:00 pm, both second grade classes are holding a Bug Fest! All family members are invited. This is your opportunity to view all the insect projects and ask questions. Students really enjoy explaining their projects, so please circulate and ask them a few questions. Please bring a "Buggy" treat or drink to share. Teachers will provide paper products.
On Wednesday, November 6, our students will visit the Scholars Library.
On Friday, November 8, I will place your child's Report Card in his/her orange "Take-Home" folder.
Students will take a Language Test.

Weekly Update: October 21 - November 1
Hello Parents,
It's nice to have cool weather for a change! I hope you are able to enjoy it!
Last week Mr. Harrison was a guest speaker. He works for the Charlotte Observer, and discussed government, reporting, and the writing process with our students. Thank you, Mr. Harrison, for sharing your time and talents!
I enjoyed meeting and discussing your children with you. Email me whenever you feel the need. :-)
This coming week our students will visit our Scholars Library and Imaginon. They will receive their Egypt projects.
In Math students will work in small groups, and individually, on multiplication, finding area, and finding perimeter.
In Science students will describe how silk is made. They will explore the "nature v. nurture" debate, in terms of inherited characteristics, and they will design a futuristic insect.
In Literacy students will receive their spelling words Monday and their stem on Tuesday. Definitions are due by Thursday. The Language Test will be Friday. Students will also practice the writing skill of putting things in a logical order.
In Social Studies students will evaluate the Bee Venture. They will learn about the importance of the Nile River to ancient Egyptians and will study hieroglyphics.

Weekly Update: October 14 - October 25
Hello Parents,
Every year the Book Fair and the Fall Festival get bigger and better! I hope you were able to attend both events with your families. We were able to sell our BeeVenture items, and we sold them all!! I'll report how much money the kids earned soon.
In addition to the Book Fair and the Fall Festival, last week our students visited the Charlotte Government Center. They were able to sit in the council members' chairs, spin the "Wheel of Fortune", visit the TV studio, visit the Mayor's office, and meet some council members. It was an entertaining and informative field trip.
This coming week in Math students will continue to work in small groups, and individually on the skills of telling time, determining perimeter, and determining area. Some will be taking a Chapter Test.
In Literacy the students will have a Language Test this coming Friday. They will receive spelling words on Monday, and the stem on Tuesday. Definitions are due on or before Thursday. Students will also work on writing using the skill of "beginning, middle, and end", and will work on the convention of exclamation marks.
In Science, students will continue presenting their Insect Projects.
In Social Studies, students will evaluate the BeeVenture. They will continue to read "Time for Kids" magazines, and they will hold a Class Meeting.

Weekly Update: October 7 - October 18

I wish you a lovely weekend with your families!
Last week was fairly calm in our classroom, with no field trips or other "special" events. We did begin our study of "Honesty", and we held a Class Meeting. In contrast, the coming week is filled with special events, in addition to all our regular learning!!
In Math, students will work individually, with partners, and in small groups, on the skills of telling time, determining perimeter, and determining area.
In Literacy, students will practice the skill of writing while sticking to the topic, and the skill of writing with a clear beginning, middle, and end. They will practice the conventions of using commas when writing cities and states, and using exclamation points. Students will have a Language Test Friday. They will receive their spelling words on Monday, and their stem on Wednesday. Definitions are due on or before Thursday.
In Science students will learn how insects eat. They will begin their Insect Project presentations on Thursday!
In Social Studies students will learn how our federal and local governments are organized. They will visit the Charlotte Government Center and will write a letter to a local official. Students will also continue to complete "Time for Kids"magazines. They will continue to make items to sell for our Bee Venture.
Here are some daily reminders for the coming weeks:
On Monday, October 7, Reading Records are due.
Permission Slips for our field trip to the Government Center MUST be turned in or your child will NOT be allowed to go on the trip.
On Tuesday, October 8, the second grade classes will visit the Charlotte Government Center. We will leave school at 9:00 am, travel by bus, and return around 1:30 pm. We will eat lunch on the grounds, so please send a lunch and drink. Also, please have your child wear his/her purple shirt for this trip.
On Wednesday, October 9, our students will visit the school Book Fair. They will make a "Wish List" of books they would like to purchase.
On Thursday, October 9, students may bring money to purchase books at the Book Fair.
Spelling definitions are due.
Students will begin presentations of their Insect Projects. EVERYTHING for the project must be turned in on this day.
On Friday, October 10, students may purchase books at the Book Fair.
We will have a Language Test.
