I hope you have been enjoying a wonderful Winter Break with your family and friends!
We have run out of bandages and we need them in a variety of sizes! Please send in a pack if you are able. Thank you!!
As we start the new calendar year of 2017, I have placed the students in three reading groups based on the results from the i-Ready Test. These groups are not necessarily the same as the writing groups, which are based on performance of school assignments.
During this coming week in Literacy, we will work to develop the following skills:
Fiction reading comprehension, using various levels of Jr. Great Books
Nonfiction reading comprehension, using Time for Kids magazines
Writing skills, using Daily 6 trait writing
Grammar skills, using Grammar Island
Spelling skills
Handwriting skills
In Science, we will study clouds, and review the cause of day and night, along with daily temperature patterns.
Here are some daily reminders for the coming weeks:
On Wednesday, January 4, we will send home this week's "Monday Folders" containing graded student work.
On Friday, January 6, writing work, (Olympics), is due from the Falcons group.
Signed Monday Folders are due.
We will have a Class Spelling Bee. Lists of words have been placed on my Home-page under "Documents". The winners of the Spelling Bee from my class and from Ms. Gutt's class will continue on to compete in the School Spelling Bee on Monday, January 9.

Spelling Bee Lists
Good Morning Parents,
Shortly before Winter Break the staff was informed that our School Spelling Bee will take place on Monday, January 9. We will hold a class Spelling Bee on Friday, January 6. The winner of that Spelling Bee will go on to compete in the School Spelling Bee. I have placed all the spelling word lists that the staff received on my Homepage under Documents.
Students are not graded on this competition.

Weekly Update: December 19 - December 30
Hello Parents,
I hope you are all having a wonderful pre-holiday weekend! We lost power for about 12 hours, and it got quite cold in our house! Power is now restored, so all is well and warm again.
On Monday, December 19, students will spend part of Literacy Class completing current assignments. They will then begin watching a holiday movie.
Hawks writing is due, (How I Live).
In Science students will complete assignments about the water cycle and about how clouds form.
On Tuesday, December 20, students will watch the rest of the holiday movie, and then play a holiday themed game of "BREAKOUT"! You can look it up online if you wish, just enter Breakout Education. (My own children are helping me figure out how to set it up this weekend!) In the afternoon students will enjoy our Winter Party.
Time for Kids is due, (Cloning Issue).
Eagles Writing is due, (Choosing Your Form of Organization).
December 21 through January 3, 2017, is Winter Break. The first day back at school for students is Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2017.

Last week our students completed the i-Ready computerized tests in Literacy and Math. The tests were adaptive for each student, asking harder questions when a student answered a question correctly, and asking easier questions when the student answered incorrectly. Parts of the test were read aloud to the students and the test even included a video game "brain-break"! I think the students much preferred this type of test to a traditional pencil and paper test.
This coming week in Literacy students will continue to develop skills in nonfiction reading comprehension using "Time for Kids" magazines and science articles. They will develop writing skills using Daily 6-Trait Writing. They will work on grammar skills using Grammar Island. Finally, some students will study "Future Problem Solvers".
In Science, students will complete a test covering "weather v. climate", air temperature, and radiant and thermal energy. Students will study the water cycle and how clouds are formed.

Weekly Update: December 5 - December 16
Hello Parents,
I hope you have been enjoying this weekend! This coming week is going to even busier than usual.
On Tuesday, December 6, students will watch videos to familiarize them with the format for the
i-Ready Tests. The tests are taken on a computer and every student needs a set of earphones. These tests are individualized, based on the students' answers as they proceed through the tests. We are using them to get a baseline against which we can measure individual progress. The i-Ready Tests replace the Terra Nova Tests.
On Wednesday, December 7, students will take the i-Ready Literacy Test. On Wednesday, December 8, students will take the i-Ready Math Test.
This coming week in Literacy, students will continue to develop nonfiction reading comprehension skills, using "Time for Kids" magazines, and articles about Native Americans. They will continue to study grammar, using Grammar Island, and they will continue to develop writing skills,using 6-Trait Daily Writing. Many students will study Future Problem Solvers.
In Science, students will study clouds, using guided notes, videos, and experiments.

Hello Parents,
I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving Holiday! The weather certainly could not have been nicer. :-)
This coming week in Literacy, students will develop skills in nonfiction reading comprehension using articles about Native Americans, which integrate Social Studies content. They will also read "Time for Kids" magazines, and work on writing skills, using "Daily 6-Trait Writing". Some students will work in Future Problem Solvers. All students will study spelling/vocabulary words, and grammar, using "Grammar Island". Students will visit our Scholars Library.
In Science, students will study radiant and thermal energy so they can build a foundation for understanding how heating and cooling of air determines much of our weather. Students will write a Lab Report for a demonstration involving heating and cooling air in balloons.

Good Morning,
Wow, how time flies!
In Literacy this coming, (very short), school week, students will continue to read Nonfiction Texts, using Time for Kids magazines, and articles about Native Americans.
Students will receive a spelling/vocabulary list for a Test on Wednesday, November 30. The list is posted under "Documents" on my HomePage. Overall, the students did very poorly on the first Spelling/Vocabulary Test. I am sure this is because they did not study. If students complete the definitions by Monday, November 28, at the latest, I will check them and return them by the following day. That way, students will know that the information they are studying is correct. For the first Test, VERY FEW students took advantage of the opportunity of having me check their work in advance, and it showed in the students' overall poor performance. PLEASE have your child turn in their definitions early. (I will repeat several words from the first test.)
In Science students will study air temperature patterns.
We will NOT send home a Monday Folder this week.
Please make sure your child has all the supplies listed on the Student Supply List. The Supply List is posted under "Documents" on my HomePage. Many students have been borrowing supplies and this has repeatedly disrupted class.

That topic integrates with Social Studies. We will visit the Computer Lab to complete the online portion of TFK. Students will take a Spelling/Vocabulary Test Monday, Nov. 14. They will continue to work on grammar skills, using Grammar Island. They will continue to work on writing skills using Daily 6-Trait Writing. Finally, students will visit our Scholars Library this week.
In Science students will complete the final Test in Landforms. They will study weather v. climate, and will explore air temperature. Students will see a special presentation about energy.

Weekly Update: October 31 - November 11
Hello Parents,
What an exciting week! THANK YOU all for making my Birthday so special. I love the hand-made cards, gifts, Indian food, flowers, and the gift certificate to Massage Envy. I can hardly wait to go and have my cares massaged away!
Thank you to all parents who helped plan and host the Fall Festival yesterday. The students were adorable and they had loads of fun!
We need bandages! Please send small finger bandages and large knee/elbow bandages. Thank you!
This coming week in Literacy students will develop their nonfiction reading comprehension skills by reading articles about our election process and the electoral college. They will continue to answer written and on-line questions using Time for Kids magazine. Students will present extensions. Some students will learn about Future Problem Solving.
In Science students will learn about volcanoes. The final Science Test for this unit will be on Thursday, November 10. It will cover glaciers, weathering, and volcanoes. Guided Notes containing URLs for videos about glaciers, weathering and volcanoes are on my home page, under "Documents". We will begin our unit on "Weather".

Weekly Update: October 24 - November 4
Good Morning Parents,
It was very nice to talk with each of you last week. Thank you for taking time to schedule and attend a Parent-Teacher Conference.
This coming week in Literacy students will continue to develop skills in nonfiction reading comprehension using Jr. Great Books Nonfiction Inquiry, Level 4, and Time for Kids magazines. We will visit the Computer Lab on Tuesday, (Moschel's Homeroom), and Wednesday, (Gutt's Homeroom), to complete the on-line portion of Time for Kids. Students will continue to work on writing skills using Daily 6-Trait Writing, Grade 3. Some students will begin Future Problem Solving. All students will study grammar using Grammar Island.

Students will then enjoy the Fall Festival from 1:00-3:00 pm. They may bring costumes to change into. No ultra-scary or gory costumes are allowed. No fake weapons are allowed. Students' vision must not be impaired. Thank you to all parents who are assisting in planning and hosting this event!

There is a "Town Hall" meeting at school at 6:30 pm. More information is available at the school website.

Weekly Update: October 10 - October 21
Good Morning Parents,
I hope you all weathered the hurricane without much difficulty. It feels great to see the sun again!
Due to the hurricane, the Book Fair will be open during school hours this coming Wednesday, and Friday. In addition, the Friday hours will be extended until 7:00pm. The Fall Social has been rescheduled to this coming Friday.
Here are some instructions for doing assignments on Google Classroom. Students cannot write on a pdf document. Therefore, the document needs to be taken out of Google Classroom and placed in Dochub. The students can then write on the document and complete the assignment. (They have already added Dochub to their email accounts.) After the document is completed, return it to Google Classroom and submit it. I will give each student a written copy of step-by-step directions, and I will place a copy on my Teacher Page under "Documents".
On Monday, October 3, Ms. Gutt and I posted signup sheets on signupgenius to schedule Parent -Teacher Conferences. Please reserve a conference time with me, and another conference time with Ms. Gutt on her sign up sheet.

They will develop writing skills using "Daily 6 Trait Writing - Grade 3". They will work on grammar skills using "Grammar Island".

October 14, students will complete a Science Test on layers of the earth and how mountains are formed. Please have your child study every night for 10-15 minutes to prepare for this test. If you have not returned the Permission Slip and payment for our upcoming field trip to the Schiele Museum, please do so as soon as possible. Students are not allowed to attend field trips without signed Permission Slips.
This week is the Scholars Academy Book Fair. All proceeds go to support our Scholars Library. This is the ONLY fundraiser for the library. On Tuesday, Teachers make "Wish Lists" for our classrooms. On Wednesday, students visit the Book Fair and complete their own "Wish Lists". Students and parents may purchase books on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. On Friday, the Book Fair is open all day and during the Fall Social.
This coming week in Literacy students will continue to develop skills in nonfiction reading comprehension, finding explicit facts, and stating support for those facts. We use "Time for Kids" magazines, both written and on-line assignments, and "Daily 6-Trait Writing , Grade 3", both written and on-line assignments. Students will also continue to study grammar using "Grammar Island", written assignments only.
In Science, students will study mountains and glaciers and will do research for their Landforms Booklets. Guided Notes with video URLs, and assignments are posted on my Home Page.

Weekly Update: September 26 - October 7
Hello Parents,
I hope you are having a nice weekend! Too bad it's still so HOT!
Last week our students visited the Scholars Library for the first time. They learned the library rules and checked out books. We plan to visit the library every other week, on Wednesdays.
Last week our students also began using Google Classroom. You are welcome to log on and check grades any time you wish. You MUST use your student's email address and password, in the Scholars Academy system. Assignments will be posted, with due dates. Students will log on, complete the assignment, and submit it to me. I will correct it, write any comments, and return it to the student. One week after the due date has passed, I will remove the assignment. You need to check grades before the assignment is removed. The assignments will be listed in the Monday Folders.
Thus far, I have posted one assignment, Time for Kids. It is due Tuesday, September 27. I have signed up our Literacy classes for the Computer Lab 3 days/week. That should be plenty of time to work online. Students may also work online at home.
I've decided to continue my Weekly Updates on this Blog, so only Assignments will be on Google Classroom. Please contact me if you have any questions about this.

In Social & Emotional Learning we will continue learning skills to help our students manage their feelings and behaviors. Last week we practiced "Self-Talk".

Weekly Update September 19 - September 30
Hello Parents,
I hope you are having a lovely weekend. I enjoyed seeing many of you yesterday at The Festival of India. This is by far, the best festival I have ever attended!
I have placed copies of the Science Guided Notes for Landforms - Definition, Water Erosion, and Wind Erosion under "Documents", on my teacher Homepage.
If your child has not joined our Google Classroom, please do so ASAP. Your child must log into his/her Scholars Academy email and accept the invitation to join. I will be starting to use Google Classroom this coming week.
This Monday, September 19, we will send home "Monday Folders". In it you will f ind all your child's graded work from the previous week. A list of included work will be stapled to the inside front of the folder. Please look over the student work,sign the stapled form, and return EVERYTHING to school by Wednesday. Most work will then be returned to you for you to keep. Some items will be retained by us for your child's Cumulative Folder.
Please have your child comply with the school Dress Code. We have had several girls wearing shorts that were much too short. Shorts and skirts need to be finger-tip length when the child's arm is extended down.
This coming week in Literacy students will continue Nonfiction Reading Comprehension using the Jr. Great Books. We will complete the selection "Crows, Friend or Foe?" and will begin "Young Inventors". Extension activities are available for all three selections we have read. Extensions deepen students' understanding of the topics studied, give students choices, and allow them to earn a level "4". All extensions are optional. We will also continue studying grammar, using Grammar Island.
In Science students will learn about different ways mountains are formed. They will take a Science Test on Thursday, September 22. Last week in Literacy our students began developing skills in Nonfiction Reading Comprehension, using Junior Great Books, "Nonfiction Inquiry, Level 4". They also began studying Grammar, using Michael Clay Thompson's "Grammar Island". In Science, students began studying Landforms. They learned what a landform is, and how water erosion causes beach erosion and forms mountains.

In Science, students will experiment and watch videos about how water erosion may form caves, streams, and canyons, and how wind erosion may effect the land. Guided Notes and URLs for the videos will be posted after the students complete and view them.

On Monday, September 12, p. 16 of the Nonfiction Inquiry Journal is due from Ms. Gutt's Homeroom students.
On Tuesday, September 13, all third grade students will take the BOG, the Beginning of Grade Literacy Test. This is a state required test. Additional information can be found on our school website. Students practiced for this test last week.
Also on Tuesday, September 13, we offer "Teacher Talk". You are invited to our classrooms for a presentation about curriculum, procedures, and anything else you wish to discuss. This is a night for parents, not students. Information is general, and teachers will not meet with parents to discuss specific students. As always, if you wish to make an appointment for a conference, just email me and we will schedule a meeting. Teacher Talk begins at 6:00 pm.
On Friday, September 16, students will complete a Grammar Quiz. See above for more details.
On Wednesday, September 21, I will be out of school during the morning. I have a doctor appointment.

Weekly Update, September 5 - September 16
Hello Parents,
I hope you had a lovely, long weekend. We have completed our first week of classes, and the students have done exceptionally well! (They have been on their best behavior.)
Please check your child's orange "Take-Home Folder" and "Agenda" every day, for any documents , homework dates, etc.
If you read my previous blogs, you know that Ms. Gutt and I intend to implement "Google Classroom" this year. If you have been invited, please use your child's Scholars Academy email address and the code to join. The code is: j8s11r
If you haven't been invited to join, that is because I do not have a student email address for your child. When Ms. Chapman returns to school this Thursday, I should be able to get the missing emails from her and invite you to join. Until then, I'll put everything on my blog.
We use "Class DoJo" to monitor student behavior. You are able to log on at any time, using your child's log-in code, to see how she/he is doing.
Last week we did "getting to know you" activities, Social & Emotional Development, and procedures. All forms and money are due by Friday, September 9. Girls on the Run sign-up is due Tuesday, September 6. The Learning Survey I sent home with your student is due Monday, September 6.
This coming week in Literacy, students will begin work on their Nonfiction Reading Comprehension, using the program, "Junior Great Books, Nonfiction Inquiry, Level 4". Your student has his/her own workbook for this unit, which he/she can take home any time. Just remember to send it back to school each day. We will also begin working on Grammar skills, using books written by Michael Clay Thompson. The textbook is "Grammar Island". Students must share these books, so they will need to be checked out. Each student will receive their own workbook, "Practice Island", which they can take home any time.
In Science, our first unit is about Landforms. Students will study how water erosion and movement of tectonic plates can form landforms. All notes are "guided", which means that students fill out the blanks as we study the materials. After students complete a set of notes, I will post them on this blog, and later on Google Classroom. If students watch a video, I will post the URL.
In Social & Emotional Learning (SEL) students will make paper quilt squares about themselves. I will read "Thank you Mr. Falkner", by Patricia Polacco, and we will discuss the book.
We will have an all-school assembly on Tuesday, September 6.

Good Morning Parents!
This is just a quick note to let you know that Ms. Gutt and I will be using Google Classroom this year. To simplify things, I will put all posts on that, and will no longer use this Blog Link. As soon as everyone signs up for Google Classroom, I will remove this link.
You should have received an invitation to join Google Classroom. You need to type in the code to join. It is: j8s11r
If you have not received an invitation, that means that I do not have your email address. Please email me and I will send you an invitation.
Information about classroom curriculum, field trips, assignments, and everything else will be on Google Classroom. Right now, our Schedule and Supply List are on it. Homework assignments will be on it, students can complete homework online, and I can correct homework and send comments on line.

Last week our students completed the EOG Tests in Literacy and Math. They then enjoyed two afternoons of Clubs. I know a good time was had by all.
We still have work to complete during this final week of school!
Please check your student's Monday Folder and be sure that he/she completes all late work by Friday, June 10.
There are many special events planned for the coming week. Please read the following daily reminders carefully.
On Monday, June 6, "Red Fern" work, chapters 18, 19, & 20, is due from Moschel's class.
"Words by Heart" work, chapters 12, 13, & 14, is due from both classes.
It is the final day of Clubs.

Last week our students enjoyed a field trip to Discovery Place, where they toured the museum and participated in an excellent workshop about Force & Motion. Students also enjoyed our School Talent Show! Congratulations to all students who were in the show, and to all students who tried out for the show. It was tremendous!
This coming week students have EOG Testing and Clubs.
In Literacy, students will continue their Novel Studies.
In Science, students will take a Quiz on gravity and forces on Thursday, June 2. They will review for that quiz, and for another Quiz on acceleration, to be given June 8.

Our class party will be from 10:00 am until lunch time at 11:45. Students may remain in school or may go home with parents after the party.

Weekly Update: May 23 - June 10
Good Morning parents,
As always, I hope you have been enjoying the weekend with your families. :-)
Last week our students enjoyed the Spirit Week dress activities. Each day was very interesting and entertaining! We also enjoyed our last visit to our Scholars Library this academic year. Please note that all library books are due this Wednesday, May 25.
This week in Literacy students will continue Novel Studies.
In Science, students will review for a Quiz about gravity and acceleration. I have scheduled the Quiz for Wednesday, May 25, but I may delay it if I feel the students aren't ready.
Here are some daily reminders for the rest of the school year. The reminders include dates of which I am aware at this time. Additional dates may be added.
On Monday, May 23, Red Fern work, chapters 13 &14, is due from Moschel's class.
Words by Heart work, chapters 7 & 8, is due from both classes.
On Tuesday, May 24, both third grade classes will visit Discovery Place. We will leave school at 8:45, travel by bus, and return to school around 2:30. Students will need to bring a disposable lunch and drink.
On Wednesday, May 25, all Scholars Library books are due
It is "New Scholars Day". New students will be observing in classrooms.
