Hello Parents,
I hope you are staying safe and warm this weekend!
Last week our students had a wonderful time bartering items at our Egyptian Market! Thank you for sending in blankets and items to trade.
Last Thursday and Friday our School Advisory Board spent time in our classrooms and time meeting with teachers. It was very interesting and exciting to spend time with individuals who are so knowledgeable about our students and about what we do to help them reach their potential.
Last Friday I placed your child's Report Card in his/her orange "Take-Home" folder.
Last Friday our class nominated students to run for our class offices: President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Parliamentarian. Students have this week to campaign with posters, buttons, or slogans. Election speeches are required. They will be read this coming Friday, February 1, right before the elections take place.
This coming week in Math we will study Chapters 3, (Measurement), 4, (Multiplication & Division), 5, (Decimals), and 6, (Geometry), in small performance-based groups.
In Literacy we will complete a persuasive paper, rough draft, peer review, and revised final copy, about whether or not students should be required to wear uniforms. We WILL have a Language Test this coming Friday.
In Science we will explore characteristics of materials that make them appropriate for specific purposes.
In Social Studies we will study the daily life of ancient Egyptians, including family structure, clothing, hair, jewelry, housing, and town structure.

Reading Records are due every Monday.
Spelling word definitions are due on or before every Wednesday.
On Friday, February 1, we will visit the Morrison Library from 11:50-12:50.
We will hold class elections.
On Tuesday, February 5, we will have Class Pictures.
On Thursday, February 7, I will be out of the classroom in the morning for a doctor's appointment. Ms. Jones will be our substitute.
On Thursday we will visit our Scholars Library.

Weekly Update: January 21 - February 1
Hello Parents,
I wish you each a lovely weekend with your families. :-)
Last week was Science Fair! Our students enjoyed examining the wonderful and varied projects. I learned a lot from the work of our students!
This coming week in math, we will continue working in small groups on Chapter 3 (Measurement), Chapter 4 (Multiplication and Division), Chapter 5 (Decimals), and Chapter 6 (Geometry).
In Literacy we will NOT have a Language Test. We will complete writing a description of a mystery object, and will continue writing a persuasive paper about whether or not students should wear uniforms to school. This paper will include a rough draft, peer review, and revised final copy. Last week we reviewed/studied nouns and verbs. This week we will study adjectives.
In Science we are studying the engineering process as part of our structures unit. We are determining properties of materials and choosing appropriate materials for different parts of structures.
In Social Studies we are studying bartering. Our Bartering Market will be this coming Thursday, January 24. As explained in last week's posting, please send one blanket (or mat) with your student for a market area. Also send items to barter. No electronics or mechanical toys. Send items you do not want returned. We will also begin studying daily life in ancient Egypt.
Here are some reminders for the coming weeks:
Reading Records are due this Tuesday and next Monday.
There is no school this Monday, January 21, in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr.
On Thursday, January 24, we will have our Bartering Market. We will also visit our Scholars Library. The School Advisory Board will be at our school. There is a Panel Discussion Thursday evening from 6:30-8:30.
On Friday, January 25, I will place your child's Report Card in his/her orange "Take-Home" folder.
A note about Report Cards:
In an effort to give you meaningful information I am breaking down the subject area into skill sets. These skill sets will vary throughout the year, depending upon the focus in the particular grading period. Please remember that these skills will continue to develop throughout the entire academic year. I am also including scores from "Common Assessments" in Literacy. These are assessments that are identical for every second grade student in both classes. We will be giving 6 common assessments during the academic year. I have included the scores from the first 3 assessments so that you can see your child's progress. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions about the Report Card.
Also on Friday, January 25, the Advisory Board will be at our school.
On Friday, February 1, we will visit the Morrison Library from 11:50 to 12:50.

Weekly Update: January 14 - January 25
Good Morning Parents,
How time flies! I hope you are enjoying this lovely weekend! :-)
This past Thursday Mr. James visited our classroom. He is an accomplished artist and the students were awed by his work. He related the steps an artist takes to create a painting, to the steps our students take to create a written paper. Thank you, Mr. James, for inspiring our students!
On Friday Mr. Yodice and I took one 8th grade class to Cary to compete in the Bar Association's Mock Trial Competition. Our students went from the regional level to the state level of competition. At the state level they were awarded second place!! I am very proud of these students. They learned a tremendous amount and went far and above the typical classroom experience. Congratulations to them!
Speaking of congratulations, the "NC Bee Buzz" printed a great article about our students' Bee Venture! I will post the article at school, and each student will receive a copy of the Bee Buzz edition. (They may take a while to get here.) Congratulations to our class!!

In Literacy we will write a paper describing an object, and will begin a persuasive paper about whether or not students should wear uniforms to school We will NOT have a Language Test this week.
In Science we will design, construct, and test a bridge. We will learn how engineers test for strength, and we will begin a mini-unit about the engineering design process.

Thursday, January 17, is the official end of the second quarter of school. I need ALL late work turned in by that day! I will send individual emails regarding late work.
Friday, January 18, there is no school. Teachers will prepare Second Quarter Report Cards.
Monday, January 21, is a holiday in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr.
On Thursday, January 24, the second grade classes will participate in a Bartering Market. Students will set up booths and barter for goods, as they did in ancient Egypt. Please send one blanket to make a booth, and some items to barter. Items should be equivalent to items the ancient Egyptians would have traded. Items can include, but are not limited to, food, jewelry, dolls, small toys, and writing or drawing items. No electronics of course. Playing cards are OK. The barters are PERMANENT, so do not send anything that you expect to get back.
Also on Thursday, January 24, we will visit the Scholars Library.

I wish you a nice weekend with your families. :-)
We are now back to our studies in earnest. This week in Math we will continue studying in small groups Chapters 3, 4, and 5, (Measurement, Multiplication & Division, and Decimals). Any student may take their Math Binder home to work in the evenings - but they must make sure to bring it back the next day.
In Literacy we will write a paper describing an object, and begin writing a persuasive paper about whether or not students should wear uniforms to school. Students will write a rough draft, get a peer reveiw, and write a revised, final copy. We WILL have a Language Test this Friday.
In Science students will design, build, and test a bridge.
In Social Studies we will study the Rossetta Stone, and begin studying bartering.

Time for Kids
Good Morning Parents,
We are finishing up some work left over from last year. Rather than have this go on and on, I am sending home some things for your children to complete. Please have them complete the items and return them within a few days.
Yesterday I sent home the first items, which are some "Time for Kids" magazines. Most students have complete all the magazines, and the remaining students need to get these done soon.
