Best wishes for a nice weekend, despite the cold, drizzly weather!
Last week was a short week, but our students did enjoy a visit to our Scholars Library. They also enjoyed demolishing their stone and mortar walls!!
Please check your student's orange "Take-Home" folder and Planner
every day. Students will now be writing down every due date in their
Planners.
This coming week in Math we will work in small groups on the following:
Green Group: Chapter 4 - Multiplication & Division.
Yellow Group: Chapter 5 - Decimals.
Blue Group: Chapter 7 - Advanced Multiplication & Division.
Red Group: Chapter 9 - Advanced Geometry.
In Literacy we will work in two performance based groups:
One group will continue writing persuasive papers.
The other group will analyze a short story using the "Jr. Great Books" series.
The class will NOT have a Language Test this week. We WILL have a pronouns test this coming Friday.
In Science students will work in assigned pairs to build a straw tower. The materials and time are limited. This is the final exam for the structures unit.
In Social Studies we will continue learning about how and why the ancient Egyptians mummified their dead. We will read and analyze "Time for Kids" magazines. We plan to have a Class Meeting.
Here are some daily reminders for the coming weeks:
On Monday, February 25, Reading Records are due. Signed Music Tests are due. Permission Slips for the field Trip on Tuesday are due. If you don't have a form, please indicate your permission on a regular piece of paper. There is no charge for this field trip.
On Tuesday, February 26, the second grade classes will visit Little Architect Firm. We will leave school at 12:15, travel by bus, and return around 2:00. Chaperones are welcome.
On Wednesday, February 27, the ancient Egypt persuasive papers are due.
On Thursday, February 28, the Jr. Great Books assignments are due. Mrs. Wooton will speak to our class about architecture.
MARCH is our month to bring pre-packaged store-bought items for the school snack cart. Please send something with your child.
On Friday, March 1, we will have a Pajama Day. Students may bring pajamas to school to change into, or wear them to school. Students may also bring a sleeping bag and one pillow, or a blanket and one pillow. They may bring ONE stuffed animal. We will meet with our Buddy Class. I will place your child's third quarter progress report in his/her orange "Take Home" folder.
On Thursday, March 7, we will visit our Scholars library.
On Friday, March 8, we will visit the Morrison Library from 11:50-12:50.

Weekly Update: February 19 - March 1
Hello Parents,
How about that snow? It certainly was beautiful!!
Last week our students had an amazing field trip to UNCC, where they visited the construction site of a new gymnasium complex. We had a well-planned tour of various parts of the project, accompanied by several workers who explained many things and pointed out patterns of construction. Each student was able to keep a hard-hat and safety vest, and received a bag of "goodies". This was a great field trip!
Next week in Math we will work on the following Chapters in our small groups:
Green Group: Chapter 4 - Multiplication & Division.
Yellow Group: Chapter 5 - Decimals.
Blue Group: Chapter 6 - Geometry.
Red Group: Chapter 7 - Advanced Multiplication & Division.
In Literacy we now have two performance-based groups.
One group will continue writing persuasive papers.
The other group will begin a study of a second story in "Jr. Great Books".
We will study pronouns this week.
There will NOT be a Language Test.
In Science we will test our stone walls.
In Social Studies we will complete our study of the pyramids, and move on to mummies. We will continue to read "Time for Kids magazines".

On Thursday, February 21, I will out of the classroom all day meeting with other teachers for "Vertical Planning", (planning between grade levels). Ms. Jones will be our substitute. Students will visit our Scholars Library.
Friday, February 22, is a half day of school. We will have an assembly in the morning in honor of Black History Month. Students will be dismissed at 11:25. Teachers will remain to prepare third quarter progress reports.
On Thursday, February 28, Mrs. Wootton will visit our classroom to share her expertise in architecture. Thank you for giving your time to our students!
On Friday, March 1, I will place your student's progress report in his/her orange "Take-Home" folder. We will meet with our Buddy class.

Field Trip Tomorrow - Friday, February 15
Hello Parents,
Tomorrow we will be going to Queen's University to tour a building site. Mr. Gandara, Noah's dad, has set this up for us.
Thank you for getting all the permission slips and waivers in on time! (I still need them from two students!) Remember that students should wear secure, closed-toe shoes and comfortable pants (no skirts or dresses). Watch the weather reports and make sure that the kids are dressed appropriately as well! We will be outside.
We will eat lunch at school but late. I have recommended that the students bring two morning snacks to get them through: one at school before we leave and one for the trip. Pizza will be held for us and we will eat in the classroom when we return to school.
Here is a note from Mr. Gandara:
"I've secured hand hats, safety glasses and vests for everyone which I'll pass out at Queens. Our tour will be conducted by Regional General Superintendent, Josh Schlechty who has overseen the construction work with the Carolina Panthers, Knight Theater, Belk Museum, Latta Pavilion on Dilworth as well as the new Knights Baseball Ball Park currently under construction Uptown."

Weekly Update: February 11 - February 22
Good Morning Parents,
I hope you are having a nice weekend.
Last week our students enjoyed visiting the Scholars Library and doing activities with our Buddy Class.
This coming week in Math we will work in the following small performance-based groups:
Green - Chapter 4 (Multiplication & Division)
Yellow - Chapter 5 (Decimals)
Blue - Chapter 6 (Geometry)
Red - Chapter 7 (Advanced Multiplication & Division)
In Literacy we will NOT have a Language Test. No, I have not given up on Spelling. Rather, right now I am focusing on helping our students develop a working understanding of basic grammar. Friday we will have a second test on adjectives. During this coming week, please practice identifying nouns and verbs with your child.
We will continue writing persuasive papers. The "Uniforms" paper is due Tuesday, February 12. Some students will begin studying short stories using the "Jr. Great Books" series.
In Science we will begin building our walls. Students must have their grave (driveway size -not fish-bowl size) by Monday, or they will not be able to build their wall.
In Social Studies we will study pharaohs. We will also have a class meeting. Please have your student bring in a picture that depicts "creativity", by Monday.

Mrs. Zhang has graciously volunteered to come to our classroom and share information about the Chinese New Year with our students.
On Wednesday, February 13, all staff will be at a Teacher Appreciation Luncheon from 11:30-2:40. Parents will supervise our students. THANK YOU for supporting this wonderful event!
On Thursday, February 14, we will exchange Valentines and any small treats you wish to send in. There is no formal party. Our class list was posted in last week's "Weekly Update".

Weekly Update: February 4 - February 15
Hello Parents,
I wish you a happy (although chilly) weekend.
Last week our students enjoyed visiting the Morrison Library.
On Friday we held class elections. Congratulations to all students who took the risk of running for office. We had many excellent posters and campaign slogans. Everyone prepared a speech - bravo! Also high congratulations to everyone on their good sportmanship if they did not win, and on being gracious winners. Our new class officers are:
President - Hannah Rowe
Vice-President - Caroline Lostetter
Parliamentarians - (After two rounds of tied voting!) Oluremi Ogundiran and James Chatigny
Secretary - Oyebanji Ogundiran
Congratulations to Jack Boutin, who won this month's character education award for "Perseverence"!
This coming week in Math we will continue to work in small groups on the following:

In Literacy we will NOT have a Language Test. We WILL have a test on identifying adjectives. We will work on two persuasive papers: whether or not students should have to wear uniforms to school, and whether you would rather live in ancient Egypt or the USA today. Students will write a rough draft, get a peer review, and write a final revised copy.
In Science we will continue to explore properties of materials. We will mix different mortars in preparation for building our walls. We will have a Vocabulary Test on Wednesday. Sometime this week, please send about two cups of small stones - gravel to school with your child for use in his/her wall. Your child may also bring sticks, grass, or hay. I will provide clay, sand, dirt, and some flat stones.
In Social Studies we are writing a paper about whether students prefer the bartering system or the money system. We will also begin our study of creativity, using a print of Frank Lloyd Wright's "Falling Waters". Please have your child bring a picture of something that represents "creativity", sometime this week. I will return the pictures at the end of the month.
