Hello Parents,
Wow! What a beautiful weekend!
Last week our students visited our Scholars Library and Imaginon Library. During the next few weeks, please make sure your child has a book-bag to take to Imaginon. Also, please make sure you have paid any library fines. I had a few children who could not check out books due to outstanding fines.
Last Thursday the research portion of the Insect Project was due. I marked each child's notes on their note cards and sent them home so they can practice for the presentations. Do NOT add any research to the note cards. If students want to memorize additional information for their presentations, that's OK, but they may not add to their written research. Remember that 3-Dimensional models are due, along with all parts of the Project, on October 10.
Last Friday our students voted for the person in our class who they thought best showed the character trait of "Respect". Students had to give a reason they chose this person. Students chose Claire McClave! Congratulations!
Also last Friday I wrote First Quarter Progress Reports. They will be sent home Friday, October 4.
This coming week in Math students will work in small groups, and individually, on linear measurement, perimeter, or area.
In Literacy students will complete work on the skill of choosing strong details for their writing, and the convention of using question marks. They will begin practicing the skill of sticking to the topic, and the convention of writing cities and states using commas. Students will receive their spelling words on Monday, and the stem-of-the-week on Tuesday. Definitions are due on or before Thursday, and the Language Test is Friday.
In Science we will continue studying effects of land use on ecosystems, and how insects see and hear.
In Social Studies we will continue to create items to sell for our Bee Venture. Thank you to everyone who sent in yarn or looms!! We will also have a Class Meeting and begin our study of the character trait "Honesty". Students will be required to bring in a picture showing an example of honesty by Friday, October 4.

On Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, October 9, 10, and 11, our school will have the annual Book Fair. Students will write a wish list and then can purchase books. Our class will be selling Bee Venture items at the Book Fair.

Also on Thursday, October 10, Insect Presentations begin!
On Friday, October 11, students will take a Language Test.
Also on Friday, October 11, our school will have their annual Fall Social. Our students will sell Bee Venture items at the Fall Social.

Weekly Update: September 23 - October 4
Good Morning Parents,
I wish you and your families a lovely weekend!
Last week our students enjoyed a visit by Bee-Keepers. We learned some interesting things about bees, students dressed up as bees doing different jobs in the hive, and a good time was had by all!
Our students also visited the Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens. A wonderful program was put on by the people at the gardens. The program included planting a cutting in a plastic bag, examining different stages of live Mealworms using magnifying cups, and releasing Ladybugs in the Greenhouse. After lunch, students toured the grounds, and enjoyed getting wet in the various fountains. THANK YOU CHAPERONES for helping to make this an enjoyable event!
This coming week in Math we will continue to work on the skills of linear measurement and finding perimeter. Students will work in 3 performance-based groups, and individually. If your child does not have a ruler which clearly shows both the US Customary System of measurement, and the Metric System of measurement, please get one ASAP!
In Literacy we will have a Language Test Friday.
We will work on the writing skill of "staying on topic", and the convention of properly writing cities and states.
In Social Studies we will complete our posters for our Bee Venture. We will begin production of items to be sold.
PLEASE SEND BLACK AND YELLOW YARN!!

Weekly Update: September 16 - September 27
Hello Parents,
What a gorgeous weekend! I'm glad that cooler weather has finally arrived.
I enjoyed talking with you Tuesday evening at "Teacher Talk". It's too bad we ran out of time. If you have any questions or thoughts you would like to share with me, please send me an email.
Last week our students worked hard in the Computer Lab to complete their research for the Insect Project. I was proud of how quickly they learned how to log on and get to a productive web site. Most students have completed their research. The few who have not finished will use our classroom computers to finish up this week.
Last week was also very exciting because it was "election week". Many students brought in wonderful posters and treats. On Friday students gave their election speeches, and the class voted. CONGRATULATIONS TO EVERYONE WHO TOOK THE RISK OF RUNNING FOR OFFICE! Additional congratulations to our winners: Devan Shah for President, Erin Williams for Vice-President, Aarush Mehta for Secretary, and Zoaib Sihorwala for Parliamentarian. We will begin by-weekly class meetings next week.
This coming week in Math we will begin work on the skills of linear measurement and perimeter. Students have been divided into 3 performance-based groups. They will alternate working with either Ms. Usha or myself, and then they will work individually.
In Literacy we will have a Language Test THURSDAY, (because we will be on a field trip on Friday). Definitions are due by WEDNESDAY.
Students will work on the skill of adding details to their writing, and the convention of using capital letters.
In Science we will study food chains and ecosystems. Bee-Keepers will visit the second grade students on Wednesday, September 18, from 1:00-2:00. We will visit the Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens on Friday, September 20, from 8:30 2:15.
In Social Studies our students have decided to form a business to make our world a better place. They hope to make money for research to help find a solution for the problem of the disappearance of the honeybees, known as "Colony Collapse Syndrome". Students will write a business plan, and create advertising posters for our "Bee-Venture". We are asking for donations from you to help with this venture. Please send in one skein of yellow or black yarn. Thank you for your support!!

Weekly Update: September 9 - September 20

I hope you are enjoying this lovely weekend.
Last week I completed giving the individual portions of the Diagnostic Reading Assessments! A few students need to finish the written part of the assessment, and then I will send home the results.
This coming week in Literacy we will continue to study writing a topic sentence, and the convention of capital letters. Spelling words will go home Monday, and students will learn words using the "Stem-of-the-Week" on Tuesday. Wednesday and Thursday students will work with their spelling words and definitions. Friday is the Language Test. Your child may hand in their definitions for correction any time before Friday.
In Math students will continue to study either rounding or subtraction.
In Social Studies we will hold Class Elections on Friday. Last week we nominated students for the offices of Parliamentarian, Secretary, Vice-President, and President. This week students may run their campaigns. They may make posters, banners, buttons, etc. They may bring SMALL treats for other students, IF every student gets a treat. Treats dependent upon votes are bribes, and are not allowed. On Friday students will read their election speeches and we will vote. Class meetings will be held every other week. Students will discuss problems/solutions, ideas for class projects or parties, and whatever else comes up.
In Social Studies we will also begin our Unit on Entrepreneurs. (This is part of our study of ancient Egypt.)

Weekly Update: September 3 - September 13
Hello Parents,
I feel that our students had an exciting and reassuring first week of school. Last week was consumed with assessing how much each student knows in reading, (Diagnostic Reading Assessment), writing, spelling, math, social studies, and science. It was a lot of tests! But now I have a good idea of where our students are in their process of learning. I have evaluated all the tests and have placed students in performance-based groups. Please note that groups are fluid and will change during the year depending on student performance!
In math I tested the following skills:
addition
subtraction
rounding
multiplication
division
fractions
time
linear measurement
weight
capacity
graphs & plots
perimeter
area
geometry
place value
decimals
The math test is too lengthy to send home, so if you wish to review your child's answers, please let me know and we'll make an appointment.
I will be teaching math skills, not units. This week students will begin in two groups and work on subtraction and rounding.
Literacy includes many areas. I am in the process of administering the Diagnostic Reading Assessments. Each test must be given individually and is rather time-consuming. As soon as I have all the results, I will email your child's complete scores to you. I record the oral reading, so if you wish to come in and listen, or view your child's responses to questions, just let me know and we'll make an appointment.
Students completed a spelling pretest and a writing sample. We worked on the skill of narrowing down a topic to make it specific, and the convention of periods.
This week I will give our first Language Test on Friday. Students will define 10 words, in complete sentences, with proper punctuation. Students will learn a Latin stem, use it in a word of their choice, and define the word in a complete sentence with proper punctuation. This week everyone will have the same words - words which many students commonly misspell. Beginning next week, all students will learn a spelling rule, but will apply that rule to different sets of words.
In Social Studies students completed a pre-test about ancient Egypt. This week we will learn about ancient Egypt using a fairy tale, we will learn where Egypt is, and we will define a "civilization".
In Science students completed a pre-test about insects, and were given their Insect Project, including due dates and a grading rubric. If you have not seen the Project, please look for it in your child's orange "Take-Home" folder.

I have your child's new username and password, and will send it home when you pay the subscription amount.

Please keep your child's purple shirt at home so he/she can wear it on field trip days. We are scheduling the field trips now, and will let you know the dates as soon as we know them.
We are also scheduling Scholars Academy Library, and Morrison Library dates, and will let you know them as soon as we know them.
Ms. Bolz has asked me to include the following message in my blog:
Hi everyone! I am the Spanish teacher for kindergarten through 3rd
grade. The kids call me Maestra Bolz. I am happy that the new school
year is starting, and I hope everybody had a good summer. I will
be coming to school this first week of classes, and then I will be
taking a maternity leave until November. I am writing to let you know
that there will be a substitute teacher leading the Spanish Class. I am
putting some materials on my personal website so you can get access to
homework sheets that do not make it home. You can also listen to songs,
print study guides for our written test and Cuestionario worksheets for
our oral test. I hope this website helps keep everybody in the same
page. The substitute teacher will give the kids these worksheets so you
do not have to print them unless they don't bring them home. Please look
for the homework check list that will be stapled in the take home
folder or planner and, please, do not leave it at home. Students will

Here are some reminders for the coming weeks:
On Tuesday, September 3, Reading Records are due.
I will be out of the classroom at a Grading & Reporting Committee meeting from 11:30 until dismissal. Ms. Usha will be our substitute.
On Thursday, September 5, Students must let me know which insect they chose for the Insect Project.
Every day the week of September 9 through 13 I have scheduled time in the Computer Lab for students to do research for their Insect Project.
On Monday, September 9, Reading Records are due.
Tuesday, September 10, is "Teacher Talk". At that time I will attempt to answer any questions you might have about our curriculum and anything else.
GRADING
There will be a presentation at "Teacher Talk" about our new grading system and the theory behind it. Because graded papers will come home before then, I would like to let you know the following:
4 = Exceeds mastery of the standard by going above and beyond what was explicitly taught in the classroom.
3 = Demonstrates mastery of the standard taught without major ommissions, errors, or misconceptions.
2 = Developing understanding of the standard taught with major omissions, errors, or misconceptions.
1 = Unsatisfactory understanding of basic ideas or processes of the standard taught.
I have discussed this system with our students, and it is posted in the classroom. Please hold all questions until after the presentation on September 10.
