Good Morning Parents,
I hope this weekend is finding you well and happy.
Last week our students enjoyed visiting the School Science Fair. They observed experiments using the scientific method, which we are using in our Structures Unit. We also enjoyed a trip to the Morrison Library. Thank you to those parents who sent bags for library books!
This week in Literacy some students will complete writing persuasive papers about their favorite subject. Other students will analyze a short story using Jr. Great Books. All students will have a Language Test on Friday.
In Math class we are completing our Unit about Number Operations. We will begin a Unit review of everything we have learned thus far this year.
In Social Studies we will label rivers in China on a map, and discuss farming in ancient China. We will also have our first class meeting with our new officers. Congratulations to everyone who took the risk to run for office! We will vote for the person to receive the character award for "Good Citizenship", and we will begin our study of "Friendship". We will read about current events using "Time for Kids".
In Science we will complete our straw towers and analyze how the shape of materials influences strength.
Here are some reminders for the coming weeks:
Every Monday your student's Reading Record is due. Every Thursday spelling word definitions are due.
On Tuesday, January 31, we will visit our School Library.
On Thursday, February 2, we will take a Field Trip to Charlotte Children's Theater where we will watch a performance of "The Borrowers". We just completed watching the movie version, and we will compare the two versions. Before we leave, students will eat half their lunch (or a large snack). We will leave school at 11:00 and return around 2:30. We will eat the rest our lunches or snacks at that time. Thank you to parents who have agreed to be chaperones!
On Tuesday, February 7, I will assign the Building Project for our science Structures Unit. The assignment includes the grading criteria and due dates. Also on Tuesday, February 7, class pictures will be taken. I will send home order forms Monday, January 30. The forms are due on the day of the pictures.
On Thursday, February 9, I will be absent for routine doctor appointments. Ms. Jones will be our substitute.

Weekly Update: January 23 - February 3
Good Morning Parents:
I hope you have been enjoying the long weekend despite the rain!
Here are some reminders for the coming weeks:
In Language Arts some students will continue to write persuasive papers with a rough draft, peer review, and final copy. Other students will be analysing short stories using the "Jr. Great Books" series. We will continue our weekly Language Tests. We also will identify action verbs.
In Math all students will be working on a Unit where we review number operations.
In Social Studies all students will be starting their study of ancient China. We will read a short story to learn about the culture, and identify ancient China on a time-line and maps.
In Science we will begin our study of Structures. We will learn about the process of design and experiment building towers.
Please remember to turn in completed Reading Records every Monday.
This Monday, January 23, I will attend a Social Studies National Standards meeting in the afternoon. Ms. Jones will be our substitute.
On Tuesday, January 24, students will view our Science Fair exhibits.
On Wednesday, January 25, we will visit the Morrison Library, Please bring all books which are due, bring a book bag, and pay any fines that are due. We will leave school at 1:15, travel by bus, and return around 2:30.
On Thursday, January 26, I will attend a Science National Standards meeting in the morning. Ms. Jones will be our substitute.
On Friday, January 25, I will place your student's Report Card in his/her orange "Take-Home" folder.
On Tuesday, January 31, we will visit our School Library. Please return all books that are due.
On Thursday, January 2, the second grade classes will take a Field Trip to watch Children's Theatre's production of "The Borrowers". We will watch the movie before we go,and compare the different versions of the story. We will leave school at 11:00, travel by bus, and return around 2:30. Students will eat a heavy snack, or part of their lunch, before leaving, and will finish any lunch they brought when we return.

Weekly Update: January 17 - January 27
Hello Parents,
I hope you are enjoying the long and sunny (but cold) weekend.
Last week we had a wonderful visit to Discovery Place. The museum is always full of interesting exhibits and activities, and the Mummy exhibit was fascinating. The IMAX movie about ancient Egypt was perfect for our students, and I am thrilled that they were able to see these special offerings at the museum.
Here are some reminders for the following weeks:
We completed our Math unit about decimals and have continued to a unit reviewing number operations.
In Literacy some students continue writing poems and persuasive papers. Other students continue to analyze Jr. Great Book short stories. All students will identify symmetry in writing and illustrations.
In Social Studies we took our Post-Test about ancient Egypt and we will begin our study of ancient China.
In Science we are explaining the effects of the movement of the Earth and sun.
In Writing his week we will not have a Language Test. Instead we will visit our school library, hold nominations for new class officers, and identify nouns and proper nouns.
Please continue to send signed Reading Records to school every Monday, or the first day of the school week.
Monday, January 16, is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. There is no school.
On Tuesday, January 17, we will visit our school library.
Friday, January 20, is a Teacher Work Day. There is no school. Teachers will be writing the second quarter Report Cards.
On Wednesday, January 25, we will visit the Morrison Public Library. Thank you to all parents who sent bags for their students' books! Please remember to check for fines, and pay them before they get too large.

Weekly Update: January 9 - January 20
Good Morning Parents,
I hope you have been enjoying the mild weather this weekend!
Here are some reminders for the following weeks:
In MATH class we continue to study place value and decimals, up to the hundred-thousands place value and the hundredths place value. This includes using money, addition, subtraction, and parenthesis.
In LITERACY we are writing persuasive, descriptive, and research papers. We are analying and writing poems. Some students are working in Junior Great Books. Weekly Language Tests and handwriting continue.
In SOCIAL STUDIES we continue our studies of ancient Egypt - pyramids and mummies. Our character trait of the month is "Good Citizenship". We continue to read "Time for Kids" magazines to find facts, fill out graphs, and read maps.
In SCIENCE we are having our Unit Post-Test on Chapter 2 of the Space Units. We will begin Chapter 3, which covers the movement of the Earth and moon.
Please continue to sign and return Reading Records every Monday.
Friday Clubs will continue until Spring Break.
On Tuesday, January 10, we will visit Discovery Place. While there we will tour the museum, see a movie about mummies, view the Mummy Exhibit, eat lunch, and visit the gift shop. We will leave school at 8:30 sharp and return around 2:30. Please send a lunch and drink, and a few dollars for the gift shop (if you wish). Thank you to parents who have volunteered to chaperone!
Monday, January 16, is Martin Luther King Junior Day. We have discussed the Civil Rights Movement, and how Good Citizens demonstrate peacefully to bring about changes in laws they disagree with. There is no school on January 16.
Friday, January 20, is a Teacher Work Day. There is no school. We will be writing second quarter Report Cards.
