Hello Parents,
I hope you and your families have been enjoying a lovely weekend. Last week our students visited our Scholars Library. While there, they each wrote a short letter to a student in Japan. The Japanese students' school had been destroyed by a tsunami, which was caused by the Fukushima nuclear meltdown. A company is donating books for us to give to those students. Each book will contain a letter written by our students. There will be a school-wide assembly about this on Thursday, April 28.
Last Thursday our school held a breakfast honoring our school volunteers. Every student wrote a poem about volunteering. Third grade students wrote limericks, which were very sweet and humorous. THANK YOU to every person who has spent time volunteering at our school! You have helped make this a great place to teach and learn!
Yesterday, Scholars Academy hosted a Conference about gifted students. Many of our teachers and our staff were presenters. Along with Sandra Horton, Hannah Harrison, Toni Hemming, and Debbie Ginsberg, I presented about "Future Problem Solvers". This terrific program teaches a method to analyze complex problems. Students work as a team to come up with an action plan to solve a part of the problem. Please contact any of us if you would like more information about this program.
It is expected that Scholars Academy students read 30 minutes every night. However, Ms. Cuneo has agreed to no longer require written Reading Records. So those do NOT need to be prepared for submission every Monday!
This coming week in Literacy, all students will be analyzing fiction text while working in novel study groups. Students will continue reading Time for Kids magazines, and will continue to study grammar.
In Science, students will complete preparations for our third grade "Science Fair". Presentations will begin May 2.

Weekly Update: April 18 - April 29
Hello Parents,
I hope you have been experiencing a lovely weekend.
If you have not already done so, please return your "Intent to Re-enroll" forms and your field trip Permission Slip and fee for our trip to Discovery Place.
Last week our students enjoyed a visit to the Mint Museum. We ate lunch on the museum grounds, sketched the museum's facade, and toured the museum guided by a docent. It was a beautiful day and a great experience for all.
Next week in Literacy some students will continue working on the skills involved in analyzing fiction text. Some students will be working on a Novel Study. Everyone will work on grammar and continue to read to locate facts using "Time for Kids" magazines.
In Science, students will continue running trials of their experiments, writing lab reports, and working on their poster boards, all for the "Third Grade Science Fair".

Weekly Update: April 11 - April 22
Good Morning Parents,
I hope you all have been having a lovely weekend.
Last week our students enjoyed a trip to our Scholars Library. They also began running trials of their experiments for our third grade "Science Fair". Thank you, parents, for sending in the supplies needed by your children! They are VERY excited about their experiments. I believe there are, or will soon be, photos of them on our school Facebook page. Third Quarter Report Cards were sent home.
Next week in Literacy, students will continue developing their skills in Fiction comprehension, grammar, and writing poetry (Limericks). Some students will begin Novel Studies.
In Science, students will continue running trials of their experiments, write lab reports, and work on project boards for their "Science Fair".

I hope you are having a lovely Spring Break! We are back in school on Monday, April 4.
This coming week in Literacy students will develop their skills in grammar, analyzing fiction texts, and reading to find facts.
In Science, students will begin planning an experiment for our "Third Grade Science Fair". Please look for the Assignment Sheet, the Presentation Grading Rubric, and the Experiment Grading Rubric. All experiments must be approved by me in advance. Experiment trials will begin Friday, April 15. Final presentations to our class will begin Monday, May 2. On May 3 students will present to the 4th grade classes.
