Parent-Teacher Conferences will be Thursday, October 20, and Friday, October 21. Both days will be half-days for students, with dismissal at 11:25.
Conferences will be held in 30 minute time slots, with the first time slot beginning at 12:15 and the last time slot beginning at 3:45. Therefore time slots are as follows:
12:15 - 12:45
12:45 - 1:15
1:15 - 1:45
1:45 - 2:15
2:15 - 2:45
2:45 - 3:15
3:15 - 3:45
3:45 - 4:15
Please indicate three preferences for your conference. Include your name, your student's name, the day and the time. Conferences will be scheduled in the order I receive your responses.

Weekly Update: September 26 - October 7
Good Morning Parents!
Once again, our class had a very busy week! Aside from all our regular studies, we visited the Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens. Thank you to all parents who gave their time to be chaperones and help keep out students safe!! The facilities, grounds, and program were exemplary. Our students were enthusiastic and well-behaved. I am very proud of the way they drew pictures of various things they saw at the Gardens.
We also had our first trip to the Morrison Library. It is a very nice library with a good selection of children's books. Sadly, several students were unable to check out books because their fines exceed $5.00. Please check with the library system and make sure all fines are paid.
We also met with Ms. Lannon's 8th grade class, which is our Buddy Class this year. As you probably already know, we have a student who suggested at our Class Meeting that we raise money to benefit the National Kidney Foundation. Our students voted to do that, and we recruited our Buddy Class to help us. We are making yarn creatures called "Furbles", puff-ball creatures, and greeting cards. We plan to sell these items at school for $1.00. We may not make a LOT of money, but everything will be done by the students (as opposed to a fund-raising company). I am working with our Community Service Coordinator to see if we can get any local "celebrities" involved with this, but that may not work out. I bought supplies for our project, but I would really appreciate it if every family could send in one skein of yarn. Any color or weight will work fine. Also, please don't let your children keep the Furbles they make at home. Then they won't buy any! Thank you for you help.

Please remember to send in signed Reading Records every Monday. Every student brought theirs in last Monday, which is terrific!
Also, overall our students did very well on this past week's Language Test! There were a lot of 100%s, or just one or two wrong. Thank you for helping your child prepare for these weekly tests!
On Tuesday, September 27, the written Insect Project facts are due for me to check. They can be written any way the student wants. I will check them, make any comments, and return them to the students for use in their presentations.
On Thursday, September 29, I will place your student's Progress Report in their orange "Take-Home" folder. Remember , this is a progress report, not a final Report Card.
On Friday, September 30, we have an extra outdoor lunch.
On Tuesday, October 4, we will have a "Pajama Day". Students may bring pajamas and slippers, a sleeping bag or blanket, a pillow, and ONE stuffed animal to school. Thus is entirely optional and students do NOT have to participate. We will have a regular school day, except that students will work on the floor on their sleeping bags or blankets. If any student chooses not to work, he/she will have to roll up their sleeping bag or blanket and return to their seat. I've done this before and the students have been VERY well-behaved and productive.
Please remember that I do not have any information about Spanish or Chinese classes. Please contact those teachers directly if you have any questions or concerns.

Weekly Update: September 19 - September 30
Good Morning Parents,
What a busy week we had! We had a very good turnout for Teacher Talk Monday night. Thank you to everyone who attended.
We had class elections on Tuesday. I don't know how your children reacted at home to the elections, but they were very good sports in class. Everyone was respectful and kind, and there were no tears. Congratulations to our new officers! Elections will be held again after Winter Break. Existing officers will not run for office again.
Also on Tuesday, students brought in their Insect Project drawings for me to check. I am very impressed with the quality of the drawings, AND that the students seem to have drawn them by themselves. Students need to bring the drawings back to class for the presentations on October 11. At that time I will grade all parts of the project.
Here are some reminders for the coming weeks:
On Monday, September 19, Reading Records are due , as they are every Monday. I have asked the students to read Chapters 1-4 of "The Green Book".
On Monday, September 19, students will receive their Spelling Words for the week, (as they do every Monday). Definitions are due Thursday, September 22, (as they are every Thursday). I usually give the students their stem of the week on Tuesday. Because we will on a field trip all that day, I will assign the stem on Monday. Stem word definitions are due Thursday, September 22, (as they are every Thursday). The Language Test is Friday, September 23, (as it is every Friday). Keeping this schedule gives students consistency from week to week, and helps them learn to plan ahead.

Please remember to send a lunch and drink with your student, as well as appropriate clothing. If you ordered a lunch, you will receive a refund for that order.
On Wednesday, September 21, the second grade classes will visit the Morrison Library. Please make sure your child has a valid library card. I have cards for all returning students. Also please make sure that any fines have been paid.
On Friday, September 23, students have a half-day of school. They will be dismissed at 11:25. Teachers will remain to write Progress Reports (already!).

Weekly Update: September 12 - September 23
Hello Parents,
Wow, what great weather! I hope you are all enjoying the weekend!
Last Friday JD Dolinger spoke to our class about Monarch Butterflies. She also gave our class two Monarch caterpillars and milkweed. With any luck we should have two chrysalises soon!
Here are some reminders about the coming weeks:
Tomorrow, Monday, September 12, is Teacher Talk from 6:00-7:00pm. We will meet in my classroom and discuss everything we can think of (as time permits). I look forward to seeing each of you there!
Also on Monday, September 12, new Spelling words will be given to your child. Definitions are due on Thursday, and the Language Test is Friday.
If you wish to order Scholastic Books for your child, payments and order forms are due this Monday, September 12. Checks only!!

Teacher Talk Date

The Festival of India was great. The dancing & music, food, sales, and displays were all superb! It was also fun to see some of you there.
I gave you the wrong date for the second grade Teacher Talk. It is Monday, September 12, NOT Thursday, September 8. I'm sorry about that and hope it does not cause you any inconvenience. See you then!

Weekly Update: September 6 - September 16
Good Morning Parents,
I hope you are enjoying the holiday weekend! I am looking forward to attending The Festival of India later today, and I'll probably see some of you there.
As you know, last week I assigned our Insect Project. Copies are on the "Documents Management" page of this website.
We also had our first fire drill. The students did a great job! We reviewed and practiced all the safety procedures.
Here is some information about the coming weeks:
We have our library time scheduled. Because books are due every three weeks, we will go to the Morrison Library every three weeks. We will travel by bus, leave school at 1:30, and return around 2:30. Chaperones are always welcome! Here is the schedule:

Our first field trip is scheduled for Tuesday, September 20. We will visit the Daniel-Stowe Botanical Gardens where we will view insects, the Butterfly Pavilion, and the gardens. Be sure to send a lunch and drink, as we will eat at the gardens. There is a gift shop. If you wish, you may send a few dollars with your child on the day of the trip. The cost is $7.00, exact cash, or checks payable to MRSA. Chaperones are needed. The first two chaperones from each class to return their Permission Slips will be admitted at no cost. Additional chaperones will need to buy a ticket at the door. Permission Slips were send home with your child on Friday.
If your child does not complete an assignment with the rest of the class, I will send it home to be finished as homework. If I send home Math homework, please only do the number of pages I designate on the note to you. Do NOT make your child do all the pages listed on the yellow sticky note, since he/she is expected to work on them in class.
We will be having bi-weekly class meetings, led by class officers. At the meetings students will discuss issues or ideas they have and propose solutions or plans for events. Everything will be submitted to me for approval. To this end, we will be having elections for class officers. The Officers are: President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Parliamentarian. Here is the election schedule: Nominations will be Tuesday, September 6. Students have one week to campaign. They may make posters, have slogans, and bring small items for the entire class. Items must be given to each child, and not be contingent upon receiving a vote. (That would be a bribe, which is not allowed.) On Tuesday, September 13, each candidate will read their election speech. They MUST prepare a speech to run for office. We will vote, swear in the officers, and have our first class meeting the following week.
