I hope you all had a MAGNIFICENT Thanksgiving!
Last week our students and many parents enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving Feast at school! Thank you to everyone who sent food, and especially to those of you who were able to attend. It means a lot to your children. :-) A very good time was had by all!
Next week in Math, students will develop their skills in addition & subtraction of multi-digit numbers, or in multiplication & division, or in decimals. Students will work in small groups, individually, or with an Intervention Specialist. Every student should memorize the multiplication tables through the tens.

In Literacy, students will develop their writing skills, and their skills in reading informational texts. They will write their Research Papers for the Social Studies Colonial Project. Students will work individually, with a peer, and in small groups.

It is Night of the Notables! All students will dress up a a notable person, and will prepare information about that person for presentation to parents and other interested individuals. All third grade students will dress up and answer clue questions about their colonial trade person.
On Friday, December 12, your child's Second Quarter Progress Report will be placed in your child's orange "Take-Home" folder.
I will be out of the school attending the Mock Trial Competition with Mr. Yodice, Mr. Havner, and the 8th grade students.

Weekly Update: November 24 - December 5
Good Morning Parents,
I hope you are enjoying this weekend! Last week our students visited the Public Library, Imaginon. Judging by the piles of books they checked out, our students should have plenty of reading materials for the Thanksgiving Holiday break!
This coming, (very short), week, in Math, students will continue to develop their multiplication skills, or will continue to work with decimals. They will work individually, in small groups, or with an Intervention Specialist. All students need to memorize their multiplication facts, through the 10s table, at home. Once your child is ready, he/she will notify us and take an oral test on the multiplication facts. If the student passes, she/he will receive a small "reward". Please help your child learn the facts by practicing at home!

In Social Studies students will complete their study of hardships faced by the early colonists. They will have a Homeroom Class Spelling Bee on Tuesday, November 25. The class winner will compete in the School Spelling Bee on Friday, December 5.

FIELD TRIP
The third grade classes will be taking a field trip to Old Salem, in Winston, Salem, on Tuesday, December 16. We will leave school at 9:30, travel by bus, and return to school around 5:00pm.
YOU MUST MAKE ARRANGEMENTS TO PICK UP YOUR CHILD AT SCHOOL, AT 5:00PM. Permission slips were sent home on November 18. The cost is $22 per student and is due no later than Monday, December 1, 2014. Students will also need to bring a bagged, completely disposable lunch. Chaperons are needed. They will have to provide their own transportation, (perhaps carpool together), to and from Old Salem as the students and teachers are taking the MRSA bus. The cost for the adult ticket is also $22. The main responsibility of the chaperons will be to guide their group of children around Old Salem in the morning and to assist at lunch. In the afternoon, the children will participate in a "hands on" experience from 1:00-3:30. Due to our group size and space restrictions, only MRSA staff members are permitted to be with the children during this part of the tour. Parents may spend that hour and a half exploring Old Salem on their own. When the tour is completed at 3:30, we will head back to Scholar's Academy. If you have any questions, please let me know!

Good morning all.
As winter has arrived and the temperatures begin to drop, many students are starting to wear footwear that although may be suitable for the temperature (especially on cold mornings), are not suitable for PE. Many students are wearing Ugg like boots, cowboy boots and other varieties. These types of footwear to do not offer suitable support, and more importantly adequate grip on the surface of the gym floor putting them self and other students at risk of injury.
Please take note of what day your student has PE, and please ensure that they have correct footwear for those days so that they can continue to be involved in all elements of the lesson and remain safe.

Weekly Update: November 17 - November 28
Dear Parents,
I am sending you wishes for a lovely weekend with your families. :-)
Last week our Scholars enjoyed a day off from school in honor of Veterans' Day. The next day, we all enjoyed a wonderful presentation honoring Veterans. We are fortunate to have several parents, and a staff member who are Veterans. One person actually fought in World War II! Our main speaker was featured on the Cover of World News, and he is really a gifted speaker. The choir, Drama Club, and orchestra performed, and the whole program was very moving.
This coming week in Literacy, students will study spelling, grammar, and writing. They will read informational texts using copies of our Social Studies textbook, and Time for Kids Magazines. They are expected to read every night and turn in a signed Reading Record every Monday. Students will work individually, obtain peer reviews from classmates, and work in small groups.

The collage is made of photos, drawings, and quotations from our own students. On Friday, Ms. Gutt and I assigned a Colonial Trade Project. This project will be done by both third grade classes. Please note that the due date for the Diagram is changed from December 15 to December 11. Students will dress as colonists for Night of the Notables on December 11, and you will guess their trade.

Last week we began our new schedule, with two Literacy Classes a day, Social Studies every day, Math every day, and no Science. When we complete this Social Studies Unit, we will switch to a Science Unit, instead of Social Studies.
This coming week in Literacy students will work on writing skills, grammar skills, and spelling skills. There will be a Language Test Friday. Students will continue to read informational texts using "Time for Kids" magazines. Students will work individually and in groups. We will continue our study of "Good Citizenship". Students are required to bring the following to class by Thursday, November 13. A photograph showing "Good Citizenship", (the photographs will be returned), a detailed. colored drawing showing "Good Citizenship", and a statement about what "Good Citizenship" means. These will count as a Literacy Grade.

Weekly Update: November 3 - November 14
Good Morning Parents,
I hope you had a great long weekend and a Happy Halloween!
Last week our students enjoyed one of the best Halloween Parties ever! The kids, (and teachers), had marvelous costumes, there were interesting and scary activities, there was lots of good food and drink, the bubbling cauldron was a big hit, and the dancing was out-of-this-world! What fun! Last week our students also visited our Scholars Library and the Imaginon Public Library. They should have plenty to read. It was also the end of the First Quarter of school, so students completed several tests.
Attention! Our class needs bandages, all sizes. We would really appreciate it if you could send a box in. Thank you.

In Social Studies students will complete their study of the Trail of Tears. They will take a Test on The Columbian Exchange and The Trail of Tears on Friday, November 7.

Students will begin a study of Colonial North Carolina. They will learn about explorers of NC and The Lost Colony.

In Math, I have divided the students into 3 groups. One group will develop their skills in solving problems with parenthesis. Another group will develop their skills in multiplication & division. A third group will receive intervention strategies in addition & subtraction with regrouping.

The third grade teachers have decided to reorganize our schedule. We will have two Literacy classes, one Math Class, and one Social Studies Class every day. Once we complete the Social Studies Unit, we will switch to a Science Unit. We feel that the concentration on either Social Studies or Science will be beneficial to our students. They will also benefit from two daily Literacy classes.
Here are some daily reminders for the coming weeks:
On Monday, November 3, Reading Records are due.
Tornadoes Literacy writing work is due.
On Tuesday, November 4, Thunderbolts Literacy writing is due.
On Wednesday, November 5, I will be out of the classroom in the afternoon for a doctor appointment.
On Thursday, November 6, Tornadoes Literacy writing is due.
On Friday, November 7, I will place your child's First Quarter Report Card in his/her orange "Take-Home" folder. Please look for it.
Students will complete a Test on The Columbian Exchange and The Trail of Tears.
On Monday, November 10, Reading Records are due.
Thunderbolts Literacy writing is due.
Tuesday, November 11, is a holiday in honor of Veterans' Day. There is no school.
On Wednesday, November 11, students will visit our Scholars Library.
