Thank you to all parents who volunteered at our Winter Party. I know the kids had a fantastic time!
And another thank you to everyone who gave me a Christmas gift - you all are very kind, and you made my holiday very happy and special!
Beginning this new year I know our students need bandages. If you could send in a box, it would be greatly appreciated.
With the start of the new year, in Literacy we will work again with Jr. Great Books, and we begin using a program called "Jacob's Ladder". In addition, we will continue developing grammar skills, and will read to find facts. Both Jr. Great Books and Jacob's Ladder are designed to help students develop skills analyzing literature. The skills include: implications and consequences, generalizations, literary elements, inferences, paraphrasing, summarizing, creative synthesis, and providing support for facts and inferences. Students will work in groups, individually, and with partners.

In Math students will continue learning about multiplication & division, and decimals, and will begin work using fractions. Students will work in small groups, individually, and with an Intervention Specialist.

In Social Studies students will complete their study of Blackbeard the prate, and will begin studying how NC became a colony, the early "class system", and the early economy. Students will work as a whole class and individually. Students will be assessed by using their written work and Tests, and by answering questions orally.

Weekly Update: December 15 - January 2
Good Morning Parents,
Despite a cold morning, it looks like we're going to have lovely weather this weekend. I hope you are able to enjoy it!
Last week our students visited our Scholars Library. Please note that all library books are due by December 17. No books should be checked out over the Winter Break. Our students also participated in our school-wide Night of the Notables. Everyone looked fabulous and they did a terrific job giving clues about their colonists. I really had a good time and I hope you did as well!
Next week the third grade students will visit Old Salem on Tuesday, December 16. We will leave school at 9:30, travel by bus, and return around 5:00 pm. YOU MUST MAKE ARRANGEMENTS TO PICK UP YOUR CHILD AT 5:00 pm. Please dress your student for cold weather - they can always take something off if they get hot. Also, do not forget to pack a disposable lunch and drink. If your child needs any medications you MUST let me know in advance. Chaperones will have to drive themselves, as there is not enough room on the bus.
Next week in Math, students will continue to develop their skills in addition and subtraction, or multiplication and division, or decimals. If your child has not memorized the multiplication facts through the 10s, they MUST do so. It is very difficult to function in our Math class if a student does not have the facts memorized.

Weekly Update: December 8 - December 19

As always, I hope you're having an excellent weekend.
Last week our students visited our Scholars Library. We also attended an extremely exciting School Spelling Bee! Our students can spell words that I have never even heard of! Congratulations to Shravan Selvavel from our class, who came in second place! Congratulation to Lucia Paulson from Ms. Gutt's class, who was also one of the final students remaining in the Spelling Bee. Congrations are also due to Chirag Chinananda and Harvyn Lim, who were the runners-up from our class.
This coming week in Math Class students will develop their skills in addition & subtraction, or multiplication & division, or decimals. They may take an oral multiplication facts test, if they are ready. Students will work individually, in small groups, and with an Intervention Specialist if necessary.
