Good Morning Parents,
I wish you and your families a fantastic holiday break.
It's hard to believe that it is only a few days until 2013! Let's hope it is a very good year for us all.
During this coming (short) week we will continue to study Chapter 3, (Measurement), Chapter 4, (Multiplication & Division), and Chapter 5, (Decimals) in our small Math groups.
In Literacy we will complete our descriptive papers.
In Social Studies we will complete our evaluation of our Bee Venture, and will continue our study of hieroglyphics. Speaking of our Bee Venture, thanks to a matching donation by one of our very generous parents, and after deducting expenses, we can send $420.00 to the North Carolina Entomological Society for research into Colony Collapse Syndrome (disappearance of the honey bees). Isn't that amazing?! Our students learned skills about being an entrepreneur, and learned they what they do DOES make a difference in our world. :-)
In Science we will find patterns in construction and build bridges, which we will then test for strength.

On Wednesday, January 9, I will spend the morning with "my" 8th grade class. We are going to the Bar Association Mock Trial competition at the State level! Ms. Jones will be our substitute.

On Friday, January 11, I will be at the Mock Trial Competition. Ms. Jones will be our substitute. Our students will visit the Morrison Library from 11:45 - 12:45.

Weekly Update: December 17 - January 4
Dear Parents,
I hope you are having a very nice weekend! Last week was very busy at school. Students presented their Ancient Egypt Projects. Some were great - some were not. We all enjoyed Night of the Notables. Thank you for coming and providing such wonderful costumes for your children. They looked great, and they knew it! :-)
THANK YOU parents for providing the fantastic lunch for the staff on Friday! It was really over the top and we loved every bite!
This coming week in Math we will complete our study of Chapter 2, (Addition & Subtraction), and will continue working in Chapters 3, (Measurement), 4, (Multiplication and Division), and 5, (Decimals), in our small groups.

Weekly Update: December 10 - January 2

Last week students began construction of their masks for their Ancient Egypt Project. Presentations will begin this coming TUESDAY (for those who tell me they are ready). For ALL students, presentations begin this WEDNESDAY. Students will wear their masks and any other costume items they have at NIGHT OF THE NOTABLES, this Thursday, beginning at 6:00pm.
Progress Reports were sent home this past Friday.
The eighth grade students did fabulous at the Bar Association Trial Competition this past Friday!! At Mr. Yodice's location they did not announce trial winners, but his team did win a Best Attorney, and Best Witness award. At my location the judges did announce who won each trial. Our Prosection Team won, and was awarded Best Attorney and Best Witness, and our Defense Team won, and was awarded Best Attorney and Best Witness. Yeah teams!

Weekly Update: December 3 - December 14
Good Morning Parents,
I hope you have been enjoying this mild weekend!
Last week our students enjoyed a guided tour of portions of the Mint Museum. They really loved the different art forms and I know they would enjoy spending more time in the musuem with you. :-)
We were also visited by Bee-Keepers. They were very entertaining and informative. Please ask your student what role they played in the presentation.
This coming week in Math we will continue working through Chapter 2, (addition and subtraction), Chapter 3, (measurement), and Chapter 4, (multiplication and division), in small performance-based groups.
In Literacy we will complete writing our "one-item" paper, with a rough copy, peer review, and final revised copy. We will begin writing a paper describing a process. We will have a Language Test on Friday.
In Social Studies we will evaluate the construction process of our Bee Venture, and we will continue selling items. We will conclude our Ancient Egypt Research Papers and begin construction of our masks. We plan to have a Class Meeting. We will begin a study of hieroglyphics.
In Science we will continue changing the shape of materials to increase their strength. We will look for patterns in construction and explain why they increase the strength of the overall structure.
PROGRESS REPORTS
The format of the Progress Reports will be different this quarter. We are in the process of revising our grading and reporting systems. This will NOT be the final form of the Progress Report, but it is representative of what we are striving for. We hope it will provide more information than the previous narrative format.

Spelling Word definitions and sentences are due every Wednesday. Both of these count toward the Literacy-Homework grade.
On Monday, December 3, Mr. Yodice and I will switch classes for one period.

Weekly Update: November 26 - December 7

I hope you are having a very Happy Thanksgiving weekend!
I would like to thank everyone who participated and/or sent in food items for our Fall Feast. It was extraordinary - with lots and lots of great food and great company! Thank you for helping make this event a success!
This coming week in Math was will continue working our way through Chapters 2, (Adding & Subtracting), 3, (Measurement), and 4, (Multiplication and Division), in our small groups. As needed, students will continue to practice subtraction with regrouping.
In Social Studies we will visit each classroom in our school and begin selling our "Bee Venture" items. Beekeepers will visit the second and fifth grade classrooms. We will also be working on our Ancient Egypt Project: visiting the Computer Lab, writing our notes in the format of a research paper, and beginning to write the descriptive story.
In Literacy we will have a Language Test on Friday. We will continue writing our "One Item" papers with a rough draft, peer review, and revised final copy.
In Science we will complete our straw towers, and we will test them for strength. We will begin a lesson on how changing the shape of materials can effect the strength of the materials.

On Thursday, November 29, the Beekeepers will visit our classroom. They will share tools and clothing from their trade, and discuss the roles of bees within the hive, and within our ecosystem. Finally, they will discuss Hive Collapse Syndrome. If you have not returned the Permission Slip with the fee please do so ASAP!!! We have to pay the Beekeepers when they arrive.
On Friday, November 30, I will spend the morning at the courthouse with the 8th grade class and Mr. Yodice. Ms. Jones will be our substitute. It is a half day of school, with dismissal at 11:25. Teachers will remain to prepare the Second Quarter Progress Reports.
On Monday, December 3, Mr. Yodice and I will switch classes for one period.

Weekly Update: November 19 - November 30

Last week we visited the Computer Lab to work on our Ancient Egypt projects, the Scholars' Library, and the Morrison Library.
This coming week is short, but we will continue to meet in small groups during Math class. We are also practicing subtraction and addition every day in class, to improve fluency and accuracy.
In Literacy we are writing a paper which includes a rough draft, peer review, and revised final copy.
In Science we are designing and building straw towers, and testing them for strength.
In Social Studies we are constructing the products for our Bee Venture. We plan to begin selling on Monday, November 26.

On Friday, November 30, there is a half day of school. Teachers will remain at school and prepare Second Quarter Progress Reports. I will be gone in the morning visiting the courthouse with the eighth grade class as part of their preparation for the Trial Competition. Ms. Jones will be our substitute.

Weekly Updates: November 12 - November 23
Good Morning Parents,
I wish you a happy weekend! Last week our students had a great trip to Salsarita's. I think everyone was able to order in Spanish, and pay for their own meal. What a fun way to make learning relevant! Thank you to our parent chaperones.
We also visited Lindy's Homemade Ice. Students asked questions about starting and running a business. We had a comprehensive tour of the facilities. AND we were able to enjoy some Italian Ice at the conclusion of our tour. We were given coupons for our students, and the whole thing was FREE! Thank you to our parent chaperones, who braved the cold to tour with us.
This coming week in Math students will proceed in small groups to learn the concepts in Chapter 2, (Adding & Subtracting), Chapter 3, (Measurement), and Chapter 4, (Multiplication & Division). Please continue to have your child practice using IXLmath, or any other program that they enjoy.
In Literacy we will have a Language Test on Friday. Spelling word definitions and sentences will be due WEDNESDAY, to give students more time to correct errors and to study. We will conclude our study of "The Green Book", and begin a writing assignment which will include a rough draft, peer review, and revised final copy. We will continue to read "Time for Kids" magazines.
In Science we will work in pairs to design and construct straw towers and test them for strength.
In Social Studies we will conclude making posters for our advertising campaign, and begin visiting classrooms spreading the word about our Bee Venture. We will continue construction of our products. I assigned the Ancient Egypt Project on Thursday, November 8. We will visit the Computer Lab to begin work on the research paper for that project.

This ia a reminder that the second grade classes are visiting Lindy's Homemade Ice tomorrow. Please send a winter coat for your child. Much of the tour is in a very cold environment.
Also, I have asked the students to bring a picture showing an example of "Friendship" to school, by this Friday. You may print a picture from the internet or may send a photograph. Photographs will be returned at the end of the month.

Weekly Update: November 5 - November 16
Good Morning Parents,
I hope you are having an enjoyable weekend, especially with the extra hour of sleep!
Last week was filled with special events. Mr. Ogundiran was kind enough to visit us. He is an archeologist, college professor, and author. He shared his culture with us, including dress and musical instruments. He also shared artifacts that he excavated himself. Some of the artifacts were over 1000 years old. Thank you for sharing your time and experience with our students!
Mr. Russell-Pinson also visited our classroom. He is an entrepreneur and has designed several educational apps. Our students interviewd him as part of our entrepreneurial unit in social studies. He also signed autographs. Than you for visiting with us!
Of course, we also had a lovely Fall Party. Thank you to all the parents who volunteered and to those who sent in items for the children to use in crafts and activities, and to eat and drink!!
Finally, we visited our seventh grade Buddy Class and the Morrison Library.
This coming week in Math we will continue studying Chapter 2, (adding and subtracting), Chapter 3, (measurement), and Chapter 4, (number stories), in small performance-based groups.
In Literacy we will conclude our study of "The Green Book", and begin a new writing assignment. Students will write a rough draft, conduct a peer review, and write a final, revised copy. We will have a Language Test Friday.
In Science we will study "Nurture v. Nature". We will conclude our unit on Insects and begin our unit on Structures.
In Social Studies we will discuss our character trait of the month - friendship. We will have a class meeting and we will continue reading "Time for Kids" magazines. We should be able to complete our business plan for our Bee Venture and begin our advertising campaign.

Weekly Update: October 29 - November 9

I hope you are enjoying our lovely fall weather. :-)
Thank you to everyone who made my Birthday a wonderful day!! And a big thank you to everyone who took the time to attend our BugFest. It was a great success, and the "buggy" treats were creative and delicious! I know it meant a lot to the students to share their projects with you.
This week in Math we continue to work in small groups on Chapter 2, (Addition & Subtraction), and Chapter 3, (Measurement).
In Literacy we will have a Reading Assessment on the "Essential Reading Questions". We will have a Language Test on Friday. We will conclude our discussion on "The Green Book", and begin a writing assignment with a rough draft, peer review, and final copy.
In Science we will discus moths v. butterflies, and learn how silk is made. We will discuss the "Nature v. Nurture" debate and how it influences insects and ourselves.
In Social Studies we will write a business plan for our entrepreneurial bee venture. We welcome Mr. Ogundiran as a guest speaker. He will share his African heritage with us. We also welcome Mr. Russell as a guest speaker. We will interview him about his entrepreneurial business. We will begin our advertising campaign for our business venture.

Students are not allowed to attend any field trip with out a signed permission slip from their parents. Please have your child wear his/her purple tie-dye shirt.

Weekly Updates: October 22 - November 2
Hello Parents,
I really enjoyed meeting with you this past week. It is always interesting and helpful to exchange information with you about your children.
This past week we also Tye-Died our field trip shirts. Please have your child wear them for each field trip throughout the year.
This coming week in Math we plan to complete working in small groups on Unit 1, (review), Unit 2 (basic computation) and Unit 3 (measurement).
In Language Arts we plan to continue discussing "The Green Book". Please have your student complete reading the book by Tuesday, or re-read the book. It seems that many students do not remember many details from the book. Our last class discussion was not very productive. I ended up reading the first chapter out loud with the students, while stopping to ask them many questions and clarifying vocabulary along the way. We will have our usual Language Test Thursday. Spelling word definitions will be due WEDNESDAY.
In Science we will conclude our lesson on the effects of land use on the ecosystem. We will study various ways that insects see.
In Social Studies we will begin our entrepreneurial lessons with a study of "What is an entrepreneur?" We will prepare questions to use while we interview an actual entrepreneur ( a parent).

On Thursday, October 25, I will be out of the classroom for oral surgery, which was rescheduled from last month. Ms. Jones will be our substitute. Students will visit the Scholars Library.
Friday, October 26, there is no school. Teachers will be writing the first quarter Report Cards.
On Wednesday, October 31, we will have a "Fall Party" from 1:00-3:00pm in our classroom. Students may bring costumes to change into, but do not bring any toy weapons please.

Weekly Updates: Ocotber 15-October 26
Hello Parents,
This has been a very busy week at Scholars Academy! I hope you are able to take some time to relax this weekend.
Extra things this past week included student pictures, the Book Fair, the Art Exhibit at the Mint Museum, and the Fall Festival. We released our butterflies and students set up an Animal Rehabilitation Center for injured butterflies.
We also began our Insect Project Presentations. Thus far, I am very pleased with the presentations. It is clear that students practiced and know their facts very well. Bravo! We plan to send home invitations to the "Bug Fest" this week. Bug Fest will be on Wednesday, October 24, from 6:00-7:00pm. Please come and view the students' projects, and bring a "buggy" treat. :-)
We are making plans for our class Entrepreneurial Fund Raising Project. First we will earn about entrepreneurs and the characteristics they have. We will interview an entrepreneur. Then we will make a business plan, advertise, purchase supplies, make items to sell, and sell them. We plan to make:

Bee Friendship Bracelets
Bee Hairclips
Bee Gift Tags
Bee "Plant" ornaments
Proceeds will go to the North Carolina Entomological Society for research into Hive Collapse Syndrome.
We have already sold 30 Bee Bookmarks to a 5th grade class in Oklahoma!

Weekly Update: October 8 - October 12
Good Morning Parents:
What beautiful weather we are having today! I hope you are able to enjoy it with your families.
Our school has a new web site. Thus far, this Blog is not being transferred automatically to my home page, so you will need to come to this site to read it. I hope we can get the transfer situation fixed soon. Sorry for the inconvenience.
Last week our scholars had an interesting visit to the Carolina Raptor Center. We saw birds of prey and learned about how they were injured and how they adapt to their different environments. We toured the facility and were rained upon (heavily)! Fortuanetly, we were able to eat lunch in the main building. Then the sun came out and students had some time to tour the facility in their small groups. Thank you to all parent chaperones!
Students also completed their research for the Insect Project. Most students completed their models on Friday. (Thank you to those parents who helped reimburse me for the cost of the clay!!) Monday we will paint the models. Presentations begin Wednesday! Please rehearse your child's presentation with him/her before Wednesday.
Our "Bug Fest" will be Wednesday, October 24, from 6-7pm. Students will share their projects with you and with Ms. Bernard's class. Please bring a "Buggy Treat." :-)
This coming week in Math we will continue studying Chapters 1 (review) and
2 (Computation using money and vaious charts to diagram problems).
In Science we will complete the Insect Project and begin presentations. We will also begin studying how land use effects an ecosystem.
In Literacy we will continue writing about a time our "heart hurt". we will complete a word study using a Vocabulary Web. Students will have a Language Test Friday.
In Social Studies we will complete writing about the importance of a calendar. We will have a Class Meeting, and complete some "Time for Kids' magazines.

On Wednesday, October 10, students will visit the Book Fair to make their Wish Lists. They may purchase books on Thursday and Friday, as well as at the Fall Festival. Insect Project presentations begin!
On Thursday, October 11, we will visit our Scholars Library from 11:45-12:15. Some students will be displaying their art work at the Mint Museum this week. There is a reception for those students and their families at the museum from 5:00-7:00pm.
On Friday, October 12, we will have a Buddy Class with Ms. Gee's seventh grade class. We will hold a Class Meeting. The second grade classes will visit the Morrison Library from 1:20-2:30. The PTO is hosting a Fall Festival at school from 3:30-5:30.
On Tuesday, October 16, the second grade classes will Tie-Dye their white shirts in Art class from 8:30 - ?. If you have not sent a white shirt for your child, please do so before Tuesday. Make sure you write their name in permanent marker on the shirt. Parent volunteers are needed!! Please let me know if you can assist with this project. Students will wear their shirts on field trips throughout the rest of the year.
On Tuesday, October 16, wednesday, October 17, Thursday, October 18, and Friday, October 19, we will have Parent-Teacher Conferences. Everyone has signed up, so I will see you then!
Thursday, October 18, and Friday, October 19, are half-days due to the conferences. Dismissal will be at 11:25.

Insect Project
Hello Parents,
In past years students have done their projects at home and parents have been responsible for purchasing all needed supplies. This year, students are doing the work for their projects in class. I have therefore just purchased $100.00 worth of clay.
Please send in $5.00 to reimburse me for this expense. Thank you!!
I have other items such as pipe cleaners and pom-poms the students may use. If you would like to send any additional supplies for your child to use, please feel free. If you do not wish your child to use the clay I purchased, please let me know.
I anticipate that we will start constucting the models on Friday, Oct. 5. Students should have a clear idea of how they want to use the materials to make their models.

Weekly Update: October 1 - October 12
Good Afternoon Parents,
I wish you a happy Sunday. Last week the second grade classes had a fantastic field trip to the Danielle Stowe Botanical Gardens. I uploaded a lot of pictures to our Shutterfly page, so please have a look and enjoy. Thank you to our parent volunteers!
This coming week in Literacy we will have a Language Test on Friday. We will write a response to the short story "Shells". We will begin reading a short Chapter book about "change" and about starting a new civilization.
In Math we will continue in small groups on Chapters 1 and 2 of the third grade math book. Please have your child practice on IXLmath when he/she has time.
In Science we will study the insect's role in the food change and ecosystem. We will visit the Computer Center and complete our research for the Insect Project. We will visit the North Carolina Raptor Center and learn how birds adapt to fit their environments.
In Social Studies we will FINALLY study the importance of the Nile River to ancient Egypt. We will begin our study of the character trait of "Honesty". Congratulations to Hannah Rowe, who was voted the most respectful student by the students of our class. We will continue reading "Time for Kids" magazine.

On Friday, October 5, I will place your child's First Quarter Progress Report in his/her orange "Take-Home' folder. Please remember that this is a PROGRESS report, not a Report Card with final grades.
On Wednesday, October 10, students will present their Insect Projects. I strongly recommend that your child practice his/her presentation with you at home. Presentations are limited to 15 minutes in length. The second grade classes will host a "Bug Fest" sometime during the week of October 15-19, from 600-7:00pm in our classrooms. The exact date has yet to be determined. Insect drawings and models will be on display and students will be available to answer questions about their insect. Please bring a "buggy" treat to share.
On Thursday, October 11, we will visit the Scholars Library. Students' art work is on display at the Mint Museum and there is a reception at the museum from 5:00-700pm. I plan to attend.

Weekly Update: September 24 - October 5
Hello Parents,
I hope you are enjoying the first official day of fall, and the Festival of India. I am in Asheville, celebrating my 28th Wedding Anniversary!
Last week special events included Dr. Postma's first "Parent-Talk". It was extremely well-done and informative. If you would like a copy of his presentation, please email him and request one. He will be very happy to forward it to you. mpostma@scholarsacademy.org
Our students held their first Class Meeting, (which will be continued next week), and took their first visit to the Morrison Library. If you owe library fines, please pay them so your child can check out books.
I published a sign-up sheet for the Parent-Teacher Conferences. It is at Signupgenius.com
So far, 17 out of 20 of you have signed up. If you haven't signed up yet, please do so.
This coming week in Math, we will continue to work on subtraction with re-grouping. Some students will take their Chapter 1 Post-Test, and their Chapter 2 Pre-test, and begin Chapter 2. Students should continue working on IXL.math We have posted a performance list in the classroom, (problems completed).
In Literacy, we will continue studying "Change" using the short story "Shells". We will continue reading "Time for Kids" magazines. We will have a Language Test on Friday. Based on performance, I have moved some students to what I hope will be more appropriate Spelling Groups.
Essential Reading Questions will be posted in the classroom. They are: 1.What is the author's main idea? 2.What language and/or pictures in the selection support the main idea? 3.How can you apply the main idea to our culture/civilization? Students have completed Assessment 1 on these questions. There will be 5 more assessments throughout the school year, to measure student progress.
In Science we will continue studying the social insect, bees. We will visit the Computer Lab two more times this week to continue our research for the Insect Project. Research is Due Wednesday, Oct. 3. We will also visit the Danielle Stowe Botanical Gardens to view insects and participate in an insect presentation.
In Social Studies we will conclude our Class Meeting and vote for the person in our classroom who most demonstrates the character trait, "Respect." We will continue exploring the concept of "systems" and will analyze an aquarium system. We may begin studying the importance of the Nile River to ancient Egypt.

Weekly Update - September 17-September 28
Good Morning Parents,
The circle of life continues. Last weekend I was in Portland, OR, for the Memorial Service for my mother-in-law. This weekend I am in Austin, TX, for the funeral service for my uncle. I missed school Friday, and will miss Monday. Ms. Jones is our substitute.
I am having trouble sending emails, so I am afraid that you will not get any responses from me until I return.
Last week I enjoyed seeing many of you at Curriculum Night. Please do not hesitate to email me if you have any remaining, or new, questions.
Last week students continued working on various skills in small groups in math class. We have been reviewing telling time, interpreting data sets, and making frequency charts and bar graphs. We will continue this coming week.
In Literacy students took their second Language Test. This test included a "stem of the week". Students are writing about change generalizations and have begun studying a short story. This coming week we will again have a Language Test, students will continue writing, and we will add reading "Time for Kids" magazines. This is a weekly publication about current events. It is helpful in developing skills in: reading to find facts, map interpretation, and graph interpretation. We also visited our Scholars Academy Library.
In Social Studies we defined a civilization and compared different time-lines. We will do a series of exercises to see how a civilization develops.
In Science students completed their insect project drawings. They are quite good! We visited the Computer Lab to continue research for the projects. We learned about complete and incomplete metamorphosis. This coming week we plan to learn about solitary and social insects.

Weekly Update: Sept. 10-Sept. 21
Hello Parents,
I am in Portland, OR, and it's supposed to reach 91 degrees! So much for enjoying cooler weather.
Last week students chose their insects for their project. We visited the Computer Lab, and students began research. They are taking notes on notecards for their presentations. Today they should begin drawing their insects. Next Monday, Sept. 10, and Wednesday, Sept. 12, we will visit the Computer Lab again. On Tuesday, Sept. 11, students will work on their drawings. Remember, all work on the project must be done in school, although if students want to do research to find a good site, or practice drawing their insects at home, that is fine.
Students gave their election speeches, and we held elections for class officers. Congratulations to EACH student for taking the risk to run for office, and for behaving in a professional manner before and after the election. Special congratulations to our winners: President: Allison Zhang; Vice-Presdient: Silvia Petrikis; Secretary: Kee Kee Venkatesh; and Parliamentarian, Oye Ogundiran. New elections will be held at the end of the first semester. We will have our first class meeting next week.
We had an interesting lesson about "Respect", using the famous photograph, "Migrant Mother". We also watched videos about the dust bowl to help students understand the photograph.
This coming week in math we will continue meeting in small groups. Each student has an individual daily assignment to work on when their group is not meeting with me. Every student has been entered on IXL. I will email your usernames and passwords individually.
Everyone has also been added to our Shutterfly page, although there are no pictures on it yet. :-)
In Literacy we will complete identifying generalizations about change. We will read a short story about change and write about the change generalizations. In addition, students will receive Spelling Words on Monday, a "Stem of the Week" on Tuesday, and will have a Language Test on Friday.
In Social Studies we will Locate Egypt on a map and a globe, and define a civilization through a series of exercises.
In Science we will be visiting the Computer Lab, drawing our insects, and learning about the life cycle of a Tiger Beetle.

On Monday, Sept. 17, Reading Records are due.
On Thursday, Sept. 20, I will be out of the classroom having oral surgery. Ms. Jones will be our substitute. I plan to be back in the classroom on Friday, Sept. 21.
On Friday, Sept. 21, we will visit the Morrison Library at 1:30. Thank you to all parents who have sent in bags for their child's library books.

Weekly Update: September 4 - September 14
Good Morning Parents,
I hope you are enjoying this Labor Day weekend!
Last week we started studying our content areas in earnest. Students completed a comprehensive math Pre-Test. I have corrected the tests, and placed your children in performance-based groups. Every chapter we will do another short Pre-Test, and your child may be moved to a different group depending on his/her skill level in that particular area of math. We had a few whole class lessons, and group lessons will begin this coming week.
In Literacy the students completed a spelling Pre-Test, and I have placed students in performance-based groups. We had a short Language Test Friday on common nouns and proper nouns. This Monday your child will be given a list of spelling words. Spelling will be taught in small groups. On Friday, students will take a Language Test. Instructions are on the spelling word list. Please check it to see what is expected. We will continue to work on common nouns and proper nouns. Reading comprehension tests are in progress. Thank you for bringing in your children before and after school! The tests are very time consuming. I will explain the results at the Parent-Teacher Conferences in October. We have begun studying the concept of "Change" using the William & Mary units developed specifically for highly gifted students.
In Science we have identified the defining characteristics of insects and are now studying different life cycles.
In Social Studies students completed a Pre-Test on ancient Egypt. We began studying what constitutes a civilization. We held nominations for class officers. Speeches and voting will be held this coming Thursday.

Weekly Update: August 27 - September 7
Hello Parents,
I hope you are enjoying this beautiful weather with your families!
We had a great first two days last week. I hope your child told you all about the interesting things we did.
This coming week in Math we will review for, and then take, the Math Pre-Test. The results from this test will help me place your child in the appropriate Math group. We will begin Lessons in the Third Grade Math Book I. I will also be giving a Pre-Test on each Unit, so your student may change Math groups depending upon his/her performance. This week we will do lessons as a class, but next week I will begin teaching lessons in small groups.
In Literacy we will study nouns and proper nouns. There will be a short Test on Friday about this. Next week students will receive spelling words and a stem of the week, and there will be a Language Test on Friday. More about this later. This week we will begin practicing proper printing, and then cursive, handwriting. We will also begin our William & Mary lessons about the concept of "Change".
In Social Studies we will nominate officers for our class President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Parliamentarian. Students may campaign for 1 week. Campaigns may include posters and slogans. Next week students will present campaign speeches and then we will vote. We will hold class meetings bi-weekly. Students will discuss issues and topics they choose. We will take our Egypt Pre-Test and begin our study of this ancient civilization.
In Science we will begin our study of insects, including their defining characteristics and life cycles. Students will receive their Insect Project. The project will be done entirely in class.
I am sorry to ask you for so many things at once, but I need the following documents/items from you:

Please check your child's Orange "Take-Home" folder every night.
Reading Records should be filled out every day by students. They should record the title and amount of time spent reading one book each day. Reading can be done in class. Parents should initial the entries and return the Reading Records the first day of each week, beginning Tuesday, Sept. 4. This is part of the Literacy grade.
On Wednesday, August 29, I will assign the Insect Project.
Friday, August 31, is a half-day of school.

Good Morning Parents!!
Welcome to my weekly updates. I will do my best to keep you informed as to what is going on in our classroom, important due dates, field trips, etc.

I am looking forward to meeting you and your children this Tuesday, August 21, at the Open House. This will be from 6:00pm - 8:00pm. It is very informal. There will be no presentation, and you can come and go as you wish. Please bring your child's school supplies.
Speaking of school supplies, please purchase a Composition Notebook for Math.
Homework: Please have your child bring an insect, dead or alive, to class on Monday, August 27.

Weekly Update: June 4 - June 8
Good Morning Parents,
How great it is to be able to open the windows and let the fresh air in! Enjoy this wonderful weekend. I look forward to seeing you Sunday for Dr. Peine's Celebration!
Last week we began our Ancient China Project Presentations! The students who presented did a wonderful job, and their projects have reflected substantial time and effort.
This week in Literacy we will discuss the final chapters of our novel studies books.
In Math we completed our year-end testing. Students will continue at their own pace this week in whatever chapter they are in. I will meet with them as necessary.
In Social Studies we will finish our Project Presentations, as well as our study of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
In Science we will conclude our study of electricity.
Here are some reminders for the final week of class:
On Sunday, June 3, our students will perform at the tribute to Dr. Peine. Students should dress nicely and be at school by 4:00. We are scheduled to perform at 4:15. I will be there by 3:30.
On Monday, June 4, Reading Records are due. Our students will perform again at the school tribute to Dr. Peine at 2:00.
On Tuesday, June 5, we have Field Day in the morning. You have received information about this from Coach Z. In the afternoon we will have a party with Ms. Bernard's Class. Students with summer birthdays may bring a treat of their choosing. Everyone else is invited to send some kind of Sherbert, Italian Ice, or ice-cream. We will have plenty of treats, so only send one container of whatever you bring. Thank you! Students will also have a Chinese Test!
On Wednesday, June 6, the Eighth Grade Graduation and Awards Ceremony will be held at 9:30.
Friday, June 8, is have the final day of Second Grade! We will have a class party, organized by our terrific room parents, in the afternoon.
I have had a wonderful year with your children. They are truly an exceptional group of kids. It has been an honor and priviledge to work with them, and a lot of fun too! Thank you for your suuport throughout this year. You have each made this a very successful year for your childen!

Last week our students successfully completed the Terra Nova Tests. Thank you for getting your child to school on time!
This coming week in Literacy we will complete our novel studies. Assignments are due Wednesday, May 30. We will also complete our class newspaper.
In Math, we have a visitor coming to teach a special lesson regarding algebra. We will continue our regular studies in Measurement, Multiplication, or Large Numbers.
In Social Studies we will continue our studies of the Seven Wonders of the ancient World. Students will also begin their presentations of the Ancient China Projects. Presentations begin Thursday, May 31.
In Science we will continue our study of electricity.

On Wednesday, June 6, an Awards and Graduation Ceremony will be held in school at 9:30.
Friday, June 8, is the last day of school for the 2011-2012 school year! We will have an end-of-year party in the afternoon. You may pick up your child any time during the afternoon.

On Tuesday, June 5, we will have Field Day in the morning. Please dress your child for outdoor activities and send a water bottle. We will return to school for lunch. In the afternoon we will have a party with Ms. Bernard's class. We will watch movies and play games. Students with summer Birthdays may send a treat and all others may send some Sherbert, Italian ice, or ice cream sandwiches, cones, bars, or cookies. One package of something will be PLENTY.
On Wednesday, June 6, an Awards and Graduation Ceremony will be held in school at 9:30.
Friday, June 8, is the last day of school for the 2011-2012 school year! We will have an end-of-year party in the afternoon. You may pick up your child any time during the afternoon.

Weekly Update: May 21 - June 8
Hello Parents,
As always, I wish you a happy and relaxing weekend!
Last week our class enjoyed a visit to the Duke Energy Explorium. After the presentation, our students already know a lot about electricity! The weather was beautiful and we had a lovely outdoor lunch and a 1 mile hike on a nature trail.
Auditions were held for the School Talent Show. Results should be available soon.
We made our final trip to the Morrison Library. If your child checked out books, it is up to you to return them.
We all had a riot on Hat Day, Sports Day, Pop-Icon Day, and Yellow Day. Thank you for helping your child participate in these events.
Next week in Literacy we conclude week 5 of our novel studies. Assignments are due Wednesday, May 23. We begin our final week of novel studies. We also continue work on our class newspaper and reading "Time for Kids" magazines. There will be NO MORE Language Tests this school year!!
In Math we continue with Measurement, or Multiplication, or Large Numbers.
In Social Studies we will take our Final Exam on ancient China. Then we will begin our studies of The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Students did an EXCELLENT job on their Power-Point Presentations. Drawings for the ancient China project are due Thursday, May 24.

Weekly Update: May 14 - May 25

I wish you a wonderful weekend and a very Happy Mother's Day!!
Night of the Arts was exceptional! All the classes did extremely well, and I enjoyed every minute of it. Thank you for coming and bringing your families to this lovely event!
Thank you for your response to my request for performers for the event honoring Dr. Peine on June 3. EVERYONE is our class will attend! That is terrific, and I'm sure you will enjoy our students' performance. Please have your child make a Furble to present to Dr. Peine. We will put eyes and names on the Furbles at school. Thank you.
This coming week in Literacy we conclude week four of our novel studies, and begin week five. Week four assignments are due Wednesday, May 16. We will also be working on our class newspaper instead of spelling. There is no Language Test this week! In addition, we will hold a Class Meeting.
In Math we continue measurement, (Ch. 3), or multiplication and division, (Ch.4), or working with large numbers, (Ch.5).
In Science we conclude building and testing our strong towers, we begin our study of electricity, and we visit Duke Energy Explorium.
In Social Studies we will conclude our study of ancient Chinese Inventions, and begin studying the Great Wall of China. Power-Point presentations for the ancient China project are due Thursday, May 17.

Weekly Update: May7 - May 18
Hello Parents,
As always, I wish you a delightful weekend with your families!
Last week our students had a lot of fun at the Hall Family Farm, and came to appreciate how much backbreaking labor goes into running any kind of farm. We all benefited from our students' labor as they picked strawberries!
We also enjoyed the school musical, Beauty and the Beast, Jr. The performances, costumes, and staging were all tremendous, and I know you are very proud of our students!
SECRET ANNOUNCEMENT:
As you may know, our class and our buddy class have been working on a special tribute to Dr. Peine. We have been asked to perform live on two occasions. The first is an event honoring Dr. Peine at our school on Sunday, June 3, from 3:00-6:00pm. The Board of Directors is planning this event and the entire school community is invited. I believe invitations will be issued shortly. Anyway, I will send home an "Intent to Participate" form for you to sign. I MUST know if we will have enough students present on June 3 to perform. Your child will need to wear something nice, and be at the school by 4:00pm. We should perform at 4:15. The performance will just take a few minutes. Our performance is a SURPRISE, so PLEASE do not let Dr. Peine know that we are planning anything special.
The second performance will be Monday morning, June 4, at school, during school. We are having a student assembly to honor Dr. Peine at that time.

This coming week in Literacy we will be continuing our novel studies. Week three assignments are due Wednesday, May 9. We WILL have spelling words this week, and a Language Test on Friday. We will continue to work on our class newspaper.
In Math, we continue our study of measurement, along with multiplication and division.
In Social Studies we continue our study of ancient Chinese inventions. We will visit the Media Lab, and meet with our buddy class. We will continue to read "Time for Kids" magazines.
In Science we will finish our final exam for the Structures Unit, (building a strong straw tower). We will begin our study of electricity.

Weekly Update: April 30 - May 11

I wish you a great weekend!
Thank you to everyone who donated supplies to our classroom! We now have plenty of Kleenex. We still need some pencils and baby wipes.
This coming week in Literacy we continue work on our novel studies. The second set of assignments is due Wednesday, May 2. We are also writing our stories for our class book. About half the class is done with their stories, and they have begun work on a class newspaper. Spelling words and our weekly Language Tests will have to wait one more week while everyone completes their class stories.
In Math we continue our unit on measurement. One group will begin a unit on multiplication and division.
In Social Studies we will visit the Media Center Wednesday, May 2, to work on practice Power Point presentations. We will study ancient Chinese inventions. The project topic is due Monday, April 30. If your child has not chosen a topic, I will assign one. We will begin our character trait study of "Hope".
In Science we will finish testing our walls, and make suggestions for improvements. We will also finish the entire "Structures" unit, with a final exam. The exam will consist of students working with a partner to design and create a strong straw tower, using limited materials.

Weekly Update: April 23 - May 4
Good Morning Parnets,
Best wishes on this rainy weekend!
Last week our students enjoyed a visit to the Charlotte Symphony. The theme was "water" and each composer painted a musical picture of a different form of water. It was very interesting and beautiful.
This coming week in Literacy we continue our novel studies of either "Maniac Magee" or "The Egypt Game". Assignments are due every Wednesday. I will discuss the assigned chapters with the students each week, beginning this week. We will also complete writing our stories for our class book. There will be no spelling words or Language Test this week. The weekly spelling words and tests will resume next week.
In Math we continue our study of measurement.
In Social Studies we continue our study of ancient Chinese Emperors. We also will go to the Media Center for the next three weeks to have lessons with Mr. Johnston. He will teach our students how to create Power Point presentations for their Ancient Chinese Project. We will also continue to complete "Time for Kids" magazines, and we will have a Class Meeting this week.
STUDENTS NEED TO BRING A USB DRIVE TO SCHOOL TO STORE THEIR WORK IN THE MEDIA CENTER!!!
In Science we will build walls using mortar the students created.

The Social Studies and Science Meetings have been cancelled, so I will be in the classroom as usual.
Reading Records are due every Monday.
On Tuesday, April 24, we will visit the Media Center.
On Wednesday, April 25, we will visit the Morrison Library. We will leave school at 1:15, travel by bus, and return around 2:30. Assignments for our novel studies are due.
On Thursday, April 26, I will assign our Ancient China Project.
On Monday, April 30, we will visit the Hall Family Farm. We will leave school at 9:00, travel by bus, and return around 12:00. We will eat lunch at the farm, so please send a lunch and drink with your student. Topic selections for the Ancient Science Project are due.
On Tuesday, May 1, we will visit our school library from 12:00-12:30, and we will visit the Media Center.
Friday, May 4, is a half day of school. Teachers will remain and write Fourth Quarter Progress Reports.

Weekly Update: April 16 - April 27
Hello Parents,
Once again, I hope you and your families are enjoying the beautiful spring weather this weekend. :-)
Yesterday we all had a wonderful time with the parents and grandparents. Thank you to everyone who attended this very special event. Out students performed beautifully, and we had a lot of fun in the classroom competing to build the tallest tower! Everyone was very enthusiastic and showed their creativity!

Yesterday I placed your child's third quarter Report Card in his/her orange "Take-Home" folder.
Here are some reminders for the coming weeks.
On Monday, April 16, students should join staff in wearing "Blue Ribbon" tee-shirts, (if they have one). Reading Records are due.
On Tuesday, April 17, all assignments for our study of "The Mouse's Bride" are due. We were going to visit our school library, but it is being used for testing.
On Wednesday, April 18, students should bring in a picture showing an example of "Fairness". Also on Wednesday, we will visit the Charlotte Symphony. We will leave school at 8:45, travel by bus, and return around 11:30. Students will eat lunch when we return.
On Thursday, April 19, we will have a Vocabulary Test in Science class. Students will be tested on the terms listed on their Engineering Handout. We will also meet with our Buddy class.
On Monday, April 23, I will be out of the classroom from 8:30-11:45 for a meeting applying the new National Standards to our Social Studies curriculum. Ms. Jones will be our substitute.
On Wednesday, April 25, I will be out of the classroom from 8:30-11:45 for a meeting applying the New National Standards to our Science curriculum. Ms, Jones will be our substitute. In the afternoon we will visit the Morrison Library. We will leave school at 1:15, travel by bus, and return around 2:30.
On Thursday, April 26, I will assign the fourth quarter ancient Chinese Project.

Weekly Update: April 9 - April 20
Good Morning Parents,
I hope you are all enjoying our Spring Break! Happy Easter to those who celebrate this holiday!
Last week students presented their Building Projects. They were very creative and included accurate patterns of construction. I could tell that a lot of time and attention to detail went into these projects, and the students can be very proud of their work! This week we will be planning a city called FurbleVille, and the Project stuctures will be our buildings. The city should be ready for viewing by Friday, April 13, Grandparents' Day.
Next week in Literacy we will be continuing our study of "The Mouse's Bride". We will NOT have spelling words or a Language Test this week! Instead, our students will begin drafting short stories for a class book.
In Math a few students will complete the Chapter 2 Test (review) and we will all begin Chapter 3, a unit on measurement.
In Social Studies we will complete our maps of an ancient Chinese city, and we will begin our study of the education system.
In Science we will plan and construct FurbleVille.
Here are some reminders for the following weeks:
Reading Records are due every Monday.
On Tuesday, April 10, we will visit the Mint Museum. We will leave school at 11:30, eat lunch on the museum grounds, and return around 2:45. Please send a bag lunch with your child.
On Thursday, April 12, we will meet with our Buddy Class.
Friday, April 13, is Grandparents' Day. Our students will give a short performance on stage at 9:30. If your child has a school shirt, any color, please have him/her wear it for the performance. Grandparents will be in our classroom from 9:50-11:15. All parents and Grandparents are welcome!!
Also, on Friday, April 13, I will place your child's Third Quarter Report Card in his/her orange "Take-Home" folder.

Dear 2nd Grade parents:
On Grandparents Day (Friday, April 13), the 2nd Graders will be presenting a performance of Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious (try typing that fast) from Mary Poppins for our visitors at 9:30. It's a short performance, but we have worked up a little movement to go along with it and there will be "solos" by pairs of students (I had lots of volunteers for this). You may have heard your child singing this or your child may have asked you to go to my school web page to find the recording for them to sing along to. The children have learned this very quickly and are excited about presenting it. It won't be a perfectly polished performance, but it will be entertaining, and shows how quickly they can learn a song and movement, which is really quite a complex undertaking considering everything involved.

Once again, I wish you a fine weekend with your families. Enjoy each other while you are together. :-)
This coming week in Literacy we will be working on "The Mouse's Bride". I assigned the work yesterday, all students highlighted the assignment sheet, we went over all pages together, students wrote the due date in their Planners, and I insisted that all students take the assignment package home. Please review the package with your student. Because of days off, Spring Break, and field trips, the assignments are not due until Tuesday, April 17.
We will NOT have spelling words or a Language Test this coming week.
In Math, students are taking the Chapter 2 Test, and we are beginning Chapter three, which is measurement.
In Social Studies we will continue designing our ancient Chinese cities, and will continue reading "Time for Kids" magazines.
In Science we will be presenting our Building Projects. All projects are due Tuesday, March 27. Unless you have requested a specific time for your child's presentation, I will call the students randomly. All presentations will be complete by the end of school on Thursday, March 29.

Weekly Update: March 19 - March 30
Good Afternoon Parents,
Once again let me wish you a happy weekend! It sure is beautiful weather!
Last week our class enjoyed a visit to the Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte. It is a beautiful facility, and was designed by the Little architectural firm, which also designed our school, and which we visited Friday.
Many thanks to Mr. Thomas Jimenes-Elaison, who treated our students to a wonderful presentation and tour of the facility. We were lucky enough to then visit the construction site on the UNCC Campus where they are building a new statium. It was great for our students to be able to see the different stages in the design and construction of a real structure.
This coming week in Literacy we will conclude our study of "Three Boys with Jugs of Molasses and Secret Ambitions". All assignments are due Thursday, March 22.
We will begin our study of "The Mouse's Bride". We will have our weekly Language Test on Friday, March 23.
In Math we are completing Chapter 1 Tests, and continuing review in Chapter 2.
In Social Studies we will design an ancient Chinese city, and will begin study of the ancient Chinese system of education. We will continue to read "Time for Kids" magazines. Pictures about "Responsibility" were due last Thursday. Four students STILL have not turned them in. Please check with your child to make sure he/she has turned in their picture.
In Science we are still studying load. In addition we will study properties of different materials, and determine how properties are related to use.
