Hello Parents,
As always, I hope you are enjoying this fine weekend with your families.
This week in Literacy we will be starting our study of "The Singing Tortoise" in the "Jr. Great Books" series. Assignment packets will be handed out Tuesday, February 28, and will be due Thursday, March 9. We will also be studying words and their stems for our Language Test on Friday.
In Math we will complete Chapter 12 Tests and Year-Review Tests, and we will begin the third grade curriculum with more number operations word problems.
In Social Studies we will begin our study of ancient Chinese writing and block printing. We will continue reading for facts, and analysing maps and charts using "Time for Kids" magazines.
In Science we will complete writing about construction patterns. Students may use this writing in their Building Project Design Notes. Then we will continue building bridges and testing their strength.
Here are some reminders for the coming weeks:
Reading Records are due every Monday.
Spelling Word definitions are due every Thursday.
On Monday, February 27, we will have our Ice-Cream Party to celebrate our students' efforts bringing in items for the heart defect campaign, and to celebrate 8 students' Birthdays that fall close to this date. Thank you to all parents who have agreed to contribute to this party!! If you leave items in the PTO or teacher lounge freezers, please make sure I know that the items are there. Please label the items for Mrs. Moschel's Class.
On Thursday, March 1, I will place your student's Third Quarter Progress Report in his/her orange "Take-Home" folder.
On Tuesday, March 6, Part II-A of the Building Project is due.
On Wednesday, March 7, we will visit the Morrison Library. We will leave school at 1:15, travel by bus, and return to school around 2:30.
On Thursday, March 8, the literacy assignments for "The Singing Tortoise" are due.

Ice Cream Party
Good Morning Parents,
THANK YOU to those parents who have agreed to bring items for our ice-cream party on Monday, February 27!!
So far we have two ice-creams, sorbet, gummy bears, bowls and spoons. We could use more ice cream and toppings. Please let me know if you are willing to bring something!

Weekly Update: February 21 - March 2
Good Morning Parents,
I hope you are enjoying the long weekend, despite the rain!
Last week was Teacher Appreciation Week. THANK YOU to everyone who gave me flowers, cards, gifts, chocolate, etc. It was a truly wonderful week. Monday the PTO provided the staff with a fabulous breakfast. Tuesday was Valentine's Day. Wednesday Girl Scout cookies arrived. Thursday the PTO treated the staff to lunch AND I won the raffle for a 32 in. Samsung flat screen TV! Wow! Friday the PTO provided us with an unbelievable dessert buffet. Again, THANK YOU to everyone who was involved in all these efforts.
This coming week in Literacy all students will analyze a short story, "The Terrible Leak", using "Jr. Great Books" Those assignments are due Friday, February 24. All students will have a Language Test, Friday, February 24, and all students will work on "Time for Kids".
In Math, we have completed our year review. Students are finishing up workbook pages and will take a Chapter Test, and Year Review test. We will then begin third grade level work.
In Social Studies we will complete discussions on the social structure of ancient China. We will have a class meeting on Thursday, February 23.
In Science we will continue to analyze patterns of construction, we will construct bridges, and test their strength.
Here are some reminders for the coming weeks:
Please bring in items for the congenital heart defect drive. We are in second place, right behind Ms. Weeks' class.
Please check you child's orange "Take-Home" folder and Planner regularly.

Tuesday, February 21, Part I of the Building Project is due. We will also visit the school library from 12:00-12:30.
Friday, February 24, is a half-day of school. Dismissal is at 11:15. Teachers will remain to write third quarter Progress Reports.

I need parents to help provide the items for the party. PLEASE email me and let me know what you can bring. We need: paper bowls and plastic spoons, ice cream, sherbert or Lindy's Italian Ice, whipped cream, and various toppings. Thank you for your help.

Weekly Update: February 13 - February 24
Good Morning Parents,
Once again, I wish you a wonderful weekend! Please check your student's orange "Take-Home" folder and Planner. Students are now writing due dates in their Planners.
We are in SECOND place regarding the school drive for items to benefit the Ronald McDonald House to help families with a child with a congential heart defect! Please send items and help in this worthy cause.
Please remember that Reading Records are due every Monday.
This coming week in Literacy some students will write a persuasive paper. Others will analyze a short story using the "Jr. Great Books" series. All students will take a Language Test on Friday. Spelling word definitions are due every Thursday.
In Math we continue our year review, ESPECIALLY regarding telling time and computing elapsed time. Your student should know their multiplication tables by this time.
In Social Studies we continue our study of the social structure of ancient China, and begin our study of their language system. We continue to work in "Time for Kids" magazines to read for facts and analyze charts, graphs, and maps.
In Science we are changing the shape of materials to increase their strength. We will identify common patterns in construction and re-build a weak structure to make it stronger.
Here are some reminders for the comming weeks:
On Tuesday, February 14, we will exchange Valentines with our students and Ms. Bernard's students. You may send small treats if you wish. Please delete the following names from Ms. Bernard's class list, which I sent you last week: Akshan and Vibhu.

Weekly Update: February 6 - February 17
Hello Parents,
I hope you are enjoying the weekend, even though it is cool and rainy!
Last week we visited our School Library, and Children's Theater. We watched a very creative production of "the Borrowers". Our students also watched the movie version at lunchtime. It was very interesting to compare the two versions.
Here are some reminders for the coming weeks:
Reading Records are due Monday.
Spelling definitions are due Thursday.
Students are expected to bring in a picture depicting "Friendship", by this Wednesday, as part of our study of that character trait.
In Math Class we continue our year review. It is clear that some students still have trouble telling time and computing elapsed time. We will be spending several class periods revisiting these concepts.
In Language Arts some students will write a persuasive paper about their best friend. Others will be analyzing a short story using the "Jr. Great Books" series. All students will learn spelling words and a stem of the week. All students will read to find facts using "Time for Kids".
In Social Studies we will learn about societal roles and expectations in ancient China. We will read and analyze several versions of the story "Mu Lan" and watch the movie version over our lunch periods. We will use these stories and movie to discuss the theme of change as a cause of conflict between generations.
In Science I will explain and hand out the Building Project. The assignment sheet contain the grading criteria and due dates. We will study how changing the shape of materials can increase the strength of the materials. We will then re-build a structure to demonstrate this principle.
On Thursday, February 9, I will be out of the classroom for routine doctor appointments. Ms. Jones will be our substitute.
