Weekly Update: June 2 - End of School Year

Good Morning Parents,

I hope you are able to enjoy this rainy Saturday!  Tomorrow should be sunny.  :-)

Last week our students enjoyed our fabulous School Talent Show!  We can be proud of our scholars for their many talents and their willingness to share those talents with others.  Special  congratulations to Jad Kassab and Dylan Deluca for their wonderful performances!

This coming week in Math students will work individually and in small groups on Multiplication or Measurement & Data.

In Literacy students will complete their creative stories for our class book.  They will continue novel studies, will analyze poems using the "Jacob's Ladder" series, and will practice cursive handwriting.

In Social Studies students will take their ancient China Post-Test.  They will study foot binding, Bonsai Trees, and the Mongolian Empire.

In Science students will demolish their walls, analyze how they break, and make suggestions for improving the walls.  They will begin their final Unit Test, which is designing and building a strong tower using limited amounts of straws and tape.

Here are some daily reminders for the coming weeks:
On Monday, June 2, Reading Records are due.
Students may re-take the Science Vocabulary Test to improve their grades.

On Tuesday, June 3, all work for "Maniac Magee", ch. 33-40, is due.
All work for "The Egypt Game",  ch. 17-23, is due.

On Thursday, June 5, I will be out of the classroom.  Ms. Usha will be our substitute.

On Friday, June 6, students will sign yearbooks.

On Monday, June 9, Reading Records are due.
We will celebrate all Summer Birthdays.
All work for "Maniac Magee", ch. 41-46, is due.
We will have Clubs in the afternoon.

On Tuesday, June 10, our students have Field Day in the morning.  Please have your child dress appropriately, including a hat and sunscreen if you wish.
We will have Clubs in the afternoon.

On Wednesday, June 11, There will Graduation Awards in the morning.
Students have a 1/2 day. Dismissal is at 11:25.

On Thursday, June 12, we will have Clubs in the morning.
Students have a 1/2 day.  Dismissal is at 11:25.

On Friday, June 13, we will have our Class Party in the morning.
Students have a 1/2 day.  Dismissal is at 11:25.

On Monday, June 16, students have a 1/2 day.  This is a Make-Up Day for the day we missed due to the power outage at our school.  Dismissal is at 11:15.

Final Report Cards will be available beginning June 23.

Weekly Update: May 27 - End of Academic Year

Good Morning Parents,

As always, I wish you a happy and restful weekend!

Last week our students completed the Terra Nova Tests.  Everyone did an excellent job of following the testing rules and bubbling in their responses.  I am confident that they also did a good job regarding the content!!

This coming week in Math students will take a Chapter Test in either Fractions or multiplication and will take their End-of-Year Math Test.

In Literacy students will work individually and in small groups on their novel studies.  They will complete writing a creative story, including a rough draft, peer review, final copy, illustration, and "About the Author" page, all for our class book.  Every student will receive a copy of the book.

In Social Studies students will present their Chinese dynasties posters, and will review for the Ancient China Post-Test.

In Science students will build and demolish their stone walls.  They will suggest improvements for the walls.

Here are some daily reminders for the rest of the academic year:
On Monday, May 26, there is no school due to the Memorial Day Holiday.

On Tuesday, May 27, Reading Records are due.

On Wednesday, May 28, all work for "the Egypt Game", ch 17-23, is due.
It is "Move-Up Day" for new students.

On Friday, we have our school Talent Show.

On Monday, June 2, Reading Records are due.

On Tuesday, June 3, all work for "Maniac Magee", ch 33-40 is due.
All work for "The Egypt Game", ch 17-23, is due.

On Thursday, June 5, I will be out of school.

On Monday, June 9, we will celebrate all the summer birthdays.  Please send in a treat if your child has a summer birthday.  We will also have a "Read-In".  Please send in a sleeping bag or blanket and a pillow.

Report Cards are available beginning June 23.  All classroom and Scholars Library books must be returned before Report Cards will be released.

Weekly Update: May 19 - May 30

Good Morning Parents,

As always, I hope you are enjoying this beautiful weekend!

Thank you to those parents who sent in supplies to get us through the end of the year!  (We really needed them.)

I am always proud of our students, and last night was no exception. They performed beautifully at Night of the Arts!  Congratulations to each of them!

Terra Nova Testing
Every year our second grade students take an end-of-year Terra Nova Test in Literacy and in Math.  The Terra Nova Test is a nationally normed test.  The scores are used to measure student progress and for placement in the coming year.  (There is nothing specific to study to prepare for these tests.)  This Tuesday, May 20, our students will take the Terra Nova Test for Literacy. This Wednesday, May 21, our students will take the Terra Nova Test for Math.  Testing begins at 8:40.  Please do NOT be late!  There will be no make-up tests.

This coming week in Math students will continue working individually and in small groups on fractions or multiplication.

In Literacy students will continue working individually and in small groups, using novel studies to improve comprehension, inferencing, and writing skills.  They will work on their creative stories for our class book.

In Science students will plan, create, and test different mortars.  If you have not done so already, please send in 1-2 cups of medium sized stones.  The students will soon use them to construct walls.

In Social Studies students will complete their research and posters about an ancient Chinese Dynasty, and will present their posters to the class.  They will study The Silk Road.

Weekly Update: May 12 - May 23

Hello Parents,

I wish you all a very Happy Mothers' Day!!

SUPPLIES NEEDED!
Thank you to the parents who sent in lined paper and #2 pencils.  We still need more!
We also need a few boxes of Kleenex. 
Each student should bring in some pebbles (described below).
Thank you!

The coming weeks are even busier than usual.
Next week in Math students will work individually and in small groups on fractions or multiplication.

In Literacy students will work on their novel studies and on a creative story for a class book.

In Science students will continue their study of how properties of materials determine their use.  They will experiment combining materials to mix different kinds of mortars.  Please send in about two cups of medium sized pebbles.  (About 1 to 2 inches in diameter.)  Students will use these to build walls.

In Social Studies students will complete their research and posters about ancient Chinese dynasties.

Here are some daily reminders for the coming weeks:
On Monday, May 12, Reading Records are due.
I will out of school.  Ms. Usha will be our substitute.

On Tuesday, May 13, we will hold our class auditions for the School Talent Show.  We must choose four acts.  They will then proceed to the final auditions, where two acts/homeroom will be selected. Your child needs to bring everything they need to perform, including any recorded music.  I will obtain a keyboard for the auditions.

On Wednesday, May 14, final auditions for the School Talent Show will be held.
All work for Manic Magee, ch.17-24, is due.
Our class will visit our Scholars Library for the final time this academic year.

On Thursday, May 15, students will take the Pre-Test for the Terra Nova Tests.  This is a short practice "Test" to familiarize the students with the format of the test.
The upper grades will perform their Night of the Arts acts for the lower grades during the school day.
The upper grades have hold Night of the Arts from 4:30-8:00 pm, at school.

On Friday, May 16, I will place your child's Fourth Quarter Progress Report in his/her orange "Take-Home" folder.
It is Grandparents' Day.
The lower grades will hold Night of the Arts from 4:30-8:00 pm, at school.

On Monday, May 19, Reading Records are due.

On Tuesday, May 20, all work for The Egypt Game, ch. 9-16, is due.
We will have the Terra Nova Reading Test, starting at 8:40 am.

Weekly Update: May 5 - May 16

Good Morning Parents,

Best wishes on this beautiful weekend!

ANNOUNCEMENT:
As you may have heard from your students, I will be teaching third grade next year!  That means I will have many of your children in my homeroom.  (Just to be clear, I have NO input regarding class assignment.)  I believe that we will be grouping students for Math and Literacy, based upon performance.  Some students will come to me for these subjects, and some students will go to the other third grade teacher for these subjects.  I am very excited about this change of grade level, and I look forward to continuing to work with many of your children again next year!

NEEDED:
Please send #2 pencils and lined paper!  We are almost out of both items.  Thank you!

FIELD TRIP:
As you know, the construction site field trip was scheduled for last week, and then cancelled.  Ms. Bernard is currently trying to reschedule the trip.  If that proves to be impossible, we will refund your money.

This coming week in Math students will work individually and in small groups on either multiplication or fractions.

In Literacy students will continue novel studies, and analyzing poems using the "Jacob's Ladder" series. I completed the individual Diagnostic Reading Assessments.  I will include the score page from the assessment done in August, 2013, and the assessment done this month, with your child's Progress Report.

In Science students will work in pairs to determine properties of materials.  There will be a vocabulary test Wednesday, May 7. 

In Social Studies students will complete their Power-Point presentations about ancient Chinese inventions, and share them with the class.  They will work on their posters about ancient Chinese dynasties.  Students will continue to read "Time for Kids" magazines.

It is Night of the Arts for the upper grades.

On Friday, May 16, I will place your child's Fourth Quarter Progress Report in his/her orange "Take-Home" folder.
It is Grandparents' Day.  I look forward to spending some time with many of our students' grandparents!!
It is also Night of the Arts for the lower grades.  Dr. Morris sent home an instruction sheet for our second grade students.  I am anticipating a wonderful performance!
